Professional Communication Award Winners 2023

We're thrilled to announce the 2023 Professional Communication award recipients. These talented individuals have demonstrated outstanding creativity, skill, and dedication in their academic work. Join us in celebrating their remarkable achievements and contributions to ProCom.


Undergraduate Awards


Jacqueline Atkins Award

The Jacqueline Atkins Scholarship honours the memory of a TMU professor who was a pioneer in the teaching of business communication in Canada. Professor Atkins exemplified business and professional communication at its finest. In everything she said and wrote, she strove to be correct, honest, and considerate of her listeners and readers. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student whose work embodies the principles of clarity, correctness, integrity and audience consideration.

Aidan Austria

Aidan Austria is from Markham, Ontario and is currently in his second year at TMU. Aidan enjoys basketball, graphic design, music, food, and spending time with his family. In the future, Aidan wants to pursue a career in creative marketing, which he hopes will allow him to use his communication skills to make a positive and lasting impact.

John Cross Memorial Award

The John Cross Memorial Award for Knowledge Transfer honours a career employee in the area of information systems that supports cancer research and treatment. The award recognizes a Professional Communication BA student who demonstrates excellence in communicating specialized knowledge to non-experts.

Stephanie Pilla

Stephanie Pilla is from Toronto, Ontario and is currently in her third year at TMU. In high school, Stephanie developed a love for writing and design, which led her to pursue her BA in Professional Communication. She currently works in marketing and communications at the Bartley Skills Development Program, a not-for-profit organization based in Brampton.

Les Mcllroy Memorial Award

Established in memory of Les McIlroy who passed away in January 2011, this award recognizes a student who demonstrates excellence in creating a persuasive product through their achievement in CMN 323 Introduction to Professional Practice. During his professional life, Les held senior positions at a number of major corporations and worked with many others as a consultant. Les was particularly interested in mentoring younger people pursuing professions related to marketing, public relations, and communications. The recipent of this award also demonstrates a compassionate and egalitarian approach to humanity through public or community volunteer work, and an understanding of the role of ethics in professional communication.

Elizabeth Kwofie

Elizabeth Kwofie is a fourth-year ProCom student known for her tireless work ethic, innovative thinking, and unwavering commitment to success. Her academic journey is marked by her outstanding 4.28 CGPA. In 2022, she received the Wayne and Isabel Fox Bursary, solidifying her status as a top-performing student. Elizabeth has her sights set on a Master of Education in Student Development and Student Services in Higher Education, which she hopes will allow her to improve post-secondary student services. Next semester, she will serve as the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Lead for Signify, ProCom’s annual student showcase. In her free time, she enjoys reading, archery, and trying new cuisines.

Graduate Awards


Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship has a value of $15,000 and is awarded to the incoming students with the highest ranking, based on academic excellence and graduate potential displayed in their application for admission.

Annalise Cajic

Annalise Cajic is a graduate of the Professional Communication BA program and, after a year running her freelance illustration business, she has returned to TMU to pursue her Master of Professional Communication degree. Annalise has a passion for visual communication and her research in the MPC program will focus on media aesthetics and AI generated art. She is honoured to receive the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and thrilled to have the opportunity to further her skills and continue learning from the professors and leaders at TMU.

Ontario Graduate Fellowships (OGF)

The Ontario Graduate Fellowship has a value of $12,000 and is awarded to the incoming student who has distinguished themselves through academic excellence and in their application for admission.

Chiara Marcello

Chiara Marcello recently graduated from the Professional Communication BA program at TMU with a double minor in Public Relations and Events and Live Entertainment Management. She's currently pursuing her Master's in Professional Communication and hopes to build a career in health communications and media relations. Chiara is an extroverted and creative person who is always looking for exciting opportunities in both her personal and professional life.

Associate Dean of Scholarly, Research & Creative Activities' Award for Best Major Research Paper

The Major Research Paper (MRP) is an extended examination of a research topic related to professional communication and is a program requirement in the Master of Professional Communication program. Valued at $1000, this award celebrates an MRP that represents excellence in both content and expression.

Denée Kiara Rudder

Denée Kiara Rudder is a recent graduate of the Master of Professional Communication program at TMU and she is driven by a passion for wellness, entrepreneurship, and social justice. In particular, Denée is focussed on addressing environmental justice issues. During her undergraduate degree in Journalism at TMU, she received the Penny Park Travel Journalism Award for an interactive map she created to shed light on environmental racism. Denée has held roles in public relations, digital marketing, and entrepreneurial ventures. Through her varied work experience, she's learned how to adapt to a variety of workplace cultures, including non-profit, start-up, and agency environments. She is the founder of My Centrepeace, a small business that provides creative content development services such as copywriting and digital marketing. In the future, Denée plans to pursue museum curation and hopes to work on projects that create meaningful change and make a strong impact.

Dean’s Award for Best Overall Performance in the MPC

The award, valued at $1000, recognizes Academic Achievement among the graduating students in the Master of Professional Communication as determined by their overall grade point average.

Lee Eldridge

Lee Eldridge served as Director of Advanced Technologies for more than 15 years at CJ Graphics, the world’s most award-winning print company, and was Associate Editor of DesignEdge, the Canadian trade magazine for graphic designers for seven years. He is currently a contract lecturer at TMU, where he teaches in the Graphic Communications Management program, as well as the Creative Industries program. As an academic consultant, Lee is developing course materials focused on generative AI technologies to integrate into some of the Creative Schools' most popular courses. His research focuses on mapping industry trends in the graphic communication industries, as well as the integration of AI-powered tools into creative professions and workflows.
