Prof. Sridhar (Sri) Krishnan - Principal Investigator

Sri Krishnan (opens in new window)  joined Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada in 1999, and currently he is a Professor of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, and a Co-director of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology (iBEST). He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering. From 2007-2017 he was a Canada Research Chair in Biomedical Signal Analysis. Sri Krishnan is a recipient of many awards including the 2016 Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer Award, 2013 Achievement in Innovation Award from Innovate Calgary, 2011 Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award, 2007 Young Engineer Achievement Award from Engineers Canada.

PhD Candidates

Alice Rueda

Alice Rueda is a returning student after working in the industry for over 15 years, and received her (hc) LL.D. degree from Brock University in 2020 for her contributions. She received the B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering and the M.Sc. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada, in 1994 and 1999, respectively. She is currently a doctoral candidate with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University, Toronto, ON, Canada. Her research interest is in signal processing for Parkinsonian dysarthria and motor analyses. She is a member of the Signal Analysis Research (SAR) Group at Ryerson University.

Garima Sharma

Garima Sharma is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University, Toronto. She received her Master's degree in 2010, and her bachelor's degree in 2007 in Electronics and communication engineering from Kurukshetra University, India. She has a teaching experience of over 8 years working as an Assistant Professor in Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering at Amity University, India. Her research interests include audio signal processing, signal analysis including pathological speech. She has been awarded the Ryerson Graduate Fellowship since 2018.

Abdelrahman (Sammy) Abdou

Abdelrahman (Sammy) Abdou is a PhD student in Biomedical Engineering who is also an experienced entrepreneur with a demonstrated history of working in the hospital & health care industry. He is the winner of the iBEST Design Competition and the Biomedical Engineering Capstone Design Project award in 2018. He received his Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) focused in Biomedical/Medical Engineering with Honors from Ryerson University in 2019. Currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering with a research focus in hardware biomedical instrumentation, data acquisition, and wearable cardiac monitoring devices. Abdelrahman Abdou is also the recipient of the Canada-Brazil Awards – Joint Research Projects (CBJRP) in 2020.

Binh Nguyen

Binh Nguyen received his B.Eng degree in Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada in 2019. Currently, he is a Ph.D. student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Binh’s research focus is on affective computing. He works on data analytics, signal processing and machine learning to analyze passive and active data in a mental health setting.
 

Michael Nigro

Michael is currently pursuing his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University. He graduated with Honours from the Biomedical Engineering B.Eng program at Ryerson in 2018 during which he worked as a Research Assistant at SAR group in 2016. He has also completed his MASc degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson in 2021 where he successfully defended his thesis on audio scene source counting and analysis and presented a first of its kind audio dataset called SARdB. His research focuses on audio scene analysis where audio signal processing and machine learning techniques are applied to solve complex tasks. Michael has authored and co-authored numerous publications involving neural networks and deep learning methods.
 

Syem Ishaque

Syem Ishaque is a current PhD student studying Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson University, he had completed his MAsc and BEng in Biomedical Engineering at Ryerson, where he has made the Dean’s list, published two research papers, played basketball in intramural and was part of BSA. His research interest includes HRV and stress analysis using machine learning and signal processing. He has always been passionate about biomedical signal analysis and algorithms.
 

Ledycnarf Holanda - (Visiting)

Ledycnarf Holanda is a PhD. Student in Physical Therapy at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, under Ana Raquel Lindquist’ Supervision. She was awarded a sandwich doctoral scholarship by CAPES to develop the study: “Machine Learning-based Upper Limb Motion Analysis of People with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis”, under the supervision of Prof. Sridhar (Sri) Krishnan. She is a Physiotherapist, graduated at the Potiguar University, and has a master’s degree in Neuroengineering at the Edmond and Lily Safra International Institute of Neuroscience. Her research interest and background are related to robotic devices, wearable technologies, assistive technologies, and machine learning applied to healthcare, and programming C++, MATLAB, and python.
 

MEng Candidates

Jong (Edward) Park

Jong (Edward) Park is a second year graduate student, in the Biomedical Engineering (MEng) program at Ryerson University. The major research project component of his graduate degree is centred on the applications of machine learning techniques to improve E-Textiles. He has a natural interest towards fitness, and he is constantly trying to better the measurable aspects of health. His first introduction to E-Textiles was through the physiological variable measuring capabilities of wearable devices, that could further be improved with the advancement of these flexible electronics. With a science undergraduate background being focused in biochemistry and human physiology, he hopes to bring in a new perspective that adds to the technical ability of the SAR group.
 

Lior Hason

Lior Hason is a first year M.Eng. student. She obtained her BEng in Biomedical Engineering from Ryerson University. Her research interests include signal processing and machine learning applied to Biomedicine.

Giordano Arezza

Giordano Arezza is very excited to be a Research Assistant in the SAR Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Krishnan. He is working on the analysis of various signals ranging from hearing to electrocardiography. Giordana is currently pursuing a B.Eng degree of Biomedical Engineering from Ryerson University.

Hae Jung Cho

Hae Jung Cho is studying in the field of Biomedical Engineering, pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering degree. She is a Research Assistant working under the supervision of Dr. Sri Krishnan. Her research involves knowledge of Electromyography and is inquiring applications of EMG signals.

PhD Positions Available

The Signal Analysis Research (SAR) group has open research positions leading to Ph.D. studies in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ryerson University. The candidate is expected to have a Masters degree in Electrical or Electronics or Biomedical Engineering. SAR group conducts research in the emerging areas of biomedical, multimedia, and satellite systems, and has industrial collaborations with local companies. The desirable candidate is expected to have a strong background and research potential/record in the areas of signal/image processing, pattern recognition, applied mathematics, and circuits and systems design.
