My name is Maria Fabregui and I am a fourth year Criminology student. I am extremely passionate about issues in homelessness and immigration. I am a committee member for Ryerson's World University Services of Canada (WUSC), which helps sponsor refugees to come to Canada to get a post-secondary education. After I graduate I hope to work as a CBSA officer to grasp further knowledge on immigration policy and law, and in the future pursue a Masters in Policy.

This past summer I was 1 of 10 Canadian university students to take part in the British Council's Student's For Social Impact pilot program. The program allowed 10 Canadian and 10 UK students to take part in an exchange program and intern for social enterprises for 10 weeks. I interned for FRC Group, a social enterprise based in Liverpool that focuses on affordable furniture for low income families. My position involved helping the Business Development Manager with various social media tasks around their new campaign called "End Furniture Poverty." Along with this, I took part in conducting my own research project, looking at UK legislation and looking at how it affects the working relationship between UK housing associations and social enterprises. I was not only lucky enough to have this opportunity, but I also got to work with a great group of people at my placement and got to make friends with an amazing group of people who share the same desire in creating a positive social impact in the world.
