Calling all TMU undergrads looking to explore innovation and get course credit

During the Winter 2024 reading week (Feb 20-24), the SDZ is offering our intensive undergraduate course, SCI888: Evidence-based Innovation. SCI888 is an open credit and is a course that students from ALL TMU programs (in 2nd year and above) may take. 

This year's theme

Throughout the week, students will be working in interdiscplinary teams on the empathetic redesign of inclusive spaces to address NIMBY-ism, using a health and social impact lens. 

What is NIMBY?

NIMBY, an acronym for the phrase "not in my back yard". It is a characterization of opposition by residents to proposed developments in their local area.

Unlike typical courses, SCI888 is not lecture-based and focuses on applying knowlegde and skills to real-world issues.

The course is currently at capacity, but the waitlist is linked here (external link, opens in new window) . Typically, students who are interested in enrolling must first complete the enrollment link. Following that, eligible students will be enrolled by the enrollment office. If SCI888 is not on your course calendar by mid-January, please contact us at discovery.zone@torontomu.ca

This is an intensive course which means that it runs only during reading week (February 20-24, 2024) from 9 am - 5 pm. There will be no final exam component to this course.

Students will be assessed through self and peer reflections, in-class participation, group work, comprehension and application of key concepts within the course, and their final presentation.

There are no prerequisites for this course. SCI888 is open to students from all undergraduate programs who are in 2nd year and above. 

SCI888 is an open-elective course. As suggested by previous cases, students may be able to convert this credit into another type to satisfy their program requirements. Students should connect with their Program Director or Administrators for more information. Note, this course cannot be credited as a liberal.
