Laura Schein joined the faculty at Ryerson in January 2004. She has taught courses in observation, interpersonal communication, literacy, concept development in mathematics, history and philosophy of Early Childhood Education, cognitive development and early primary programming using the Ontario curriculum with a constructivist approach. Schein has supervised placements in a variety of schools and community settings. She has worked in many field placement classrooms as part of the “We Will Read” initiative with TDSB since 2012. This work as faculty advisor in field placements, plus regular volunteer work in TDSB classrooms, keeps her in touch with children and schools. She has been a teacher for more than 50 years with students from preschool to university. Her major project for most of those years was creating, developing and sustaining alternative school programs. In 1975, she co-founded The School House where she was the principal and a teacher until 2003. In her Ryerson teaching, Schein often uses The School House as a source of reference and inspiration to future educators.
