ECS scholarships and awards

Ryerson offers many different awards and scholarships to acknowledge students’ achievements, facilitate their education and promote their success.

As a student in the School of Early Childhood Studies, you may qualify for some of these awards. Below are some examples of awards for which you may be eligible.

Automatic awards (no application required)

Colleen Roulston Memorial Award
Value: Up to $1,500
Award criteria:

  • high standing in research courses CLD 322 and CLD 323


AND/OR

  • demonstrated a persistent commitment to the child care field through a mix of skills and knowledge in research, administration and/or child care policy
Competitive awards (application required)

Nancy C. Sprott School of Early Childhood Studies Awards
Value: 11 awards of up to $8,000 (amount may vary annually)
Application due by: September 28, 2018 at 4 p.m.
Award criteria:

  • current full-time student who has completed at least one academic year

  • demonstrated academic excellence

  • shown a commitment to the early childhood education field by volunteering in the Ryerson or the local community

  • demonstrated financial need

Ryerson General Scholarships
Value: Two awards of up to $676 (value of award and number of recipients may vary annually)
Application due by:
September 28, 2018 at 4 p.m.
Award criteria: Full- or part-time ECS students who have demonstrated financial need

  • above-average academic achievement in all courses demonstrated by a minimum 3.0 grade point average and above-satisfactory competence in field education


OR

  • professional excellence as an early childhood educator through a commitment to the profession and/or the school, involvement in extracurricular activities related to the field, excellent interpersonal skills with professionals and peers, and/or outstanding competence in field education and academic achievement in all courses (minimum 2.0 GPA).

Jillian Logel Memorial Scholarship
Value: Up to $1,868 (amount may vary annually)
Application due by: September 28, 2018 at 4 p.m.
Award criteria: full-time second- or third-year students who:

  • demonstrate a recognition of the need for ongoing professional development,

  • demonstrate an understanding of and contribution to the community and its resources, 

  • demonstrate leadership within the student body to promote the concept of “developing professionalism,” 

  • continue to demonstrate a natural ability and enthusiasm for teaching young children in a creative and caring manner, 

  • demonstrate financial need, and 

  • maintain a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA.

Meghan Savage Memorial Award
Value: Up to $1,338 (amount may vary annually)
Application due by: September 28, 2018 at 4 p.m.
Award criteria: full-time third- or fourth-year student (Direct Entry full-time and George Brown Collaborative third-year students) who:

  • plans to pursue a teaching career in early childhood education, 

  • has not received any other scholarship or award from the school or university within the calendar year of the application.

Grayson and Christina Lew Literacy Award
Value: Up to $1,000 (amount may vary annually)
Application due by: September 28, 2018 at 4 p.m.
Award criteria: A full- or part-time undergraduate student who has:

  • successfully completed the Literacy in the Early Years course (CLD 314),

  • demonstrated academic excellence and leadership in promoting literacy in the community (through volunteer experiences, field education, etc.)
  • be in clear academic standing at the time of application

Deborah and Murray Chant Award for Excellence in Field Education
Value: Up to $921 (amount may vary annually)
Application due by: September 28, 2018 at 4 p.m.
Award criteria: a full-time student who in their second year placement has:

  • shown leadership and excellence in their placement by taking initiative and responsibility, and showing professionalism, independent thought and dedication,

  • demonstrated their ability to put theory into practice, and

  • received the excellence certificate and an excellent assessment from their field educator.

Kiola Isaacs Award
Value: Up to $1,000 (amount may vary annually)
Application due by: September 28, 2018 at 4 p.m.
Award criteria:

Awarded to support a student in the School of Early Childhood Studies with high academic standing who is enrolled in the concurrent BA/BEd program with York University and who has demonstrated an interest/commitment to inclusive education for children experiencing disability.

Preference is given to students with a demonstrated interest in learning disabilities.

To be eligible for this award, students must:

  • be registered as undergraduate full-time or part-time students at Ryerson University in the School of Early Childhood Studies
  • have a clear academic standing
  • be enrolled in the concurrent BA/BEd program with York University
  • have a minimum CGPA of 3.00
