Distance field placement: Part-time program

Ryerson’s School of Early Childhood Studies offers part-time program students the flexibility to pursue their field education in a way that’s geographically convenient. This means that you can complete your third-year placement course and/or fourth-year placement course in a setting that is outside the boundaries of the distance option map.

CCLD363 Distance Option

Students taking the CCLD363 Distance Option field placement  must complete and submit a proposal that describes the placement program and how it will allow you to achieve your course objectives. All placement sites are subject to approval by the School of Early Childhood Studies and Ryerson University. Your placement site and residence must be outside the boundaries of the distance option map.

Submit your proposal by the deadline:

  • March 20  (for spring 2020 placements)
  • May 25 (for summer 2020 placements)

CCLD464 Distance Option

Students taking the CCLD464 Distance Option field placement will be sent a link to the CCLD464 Placement Information Video. The video link is available on request from the Field Education Coordinator Martha Anapliotis at martha.anapliotis@ryerson.ca

All placement sites are subject to approval by the School of Early Childhood Studies and Ryerson University. Your placement site and residence must be outside the boundaries of the distance option map.

Once your site has been approved, you must provide your distance placement field educator with the link to this Field Education Manual.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated by your field educator at the midterm and at the end of your placement. You will also self-evaluate your own performance at the midterm and at the end of your placement.

Course documents

Students will complete three course documents, listed below, and follow this protocol:

  • complete them by hand (not digitally)
  • print them on white letter-sized paper
  • the first two forms remain at the placement site for the duration of the placement
  • the third form is submitted electronically to the Faculty Advisor after the first placement day

CCLD 464 Attendance Record This form will remain at your placement site for the duration of your placement.

WSIB Student Declaration Submit electronically to your faculty advisor on your first day of placement.

Non-academic documentation

If your placement site is in Ontario, submit the following:

  • Vulnerable Sector Screening form from the police service in the municipality where you permanently reside. If you live permanently in the city of Toronto, applications are picked up from the ECS office. If your permanent residence is outside of Toronto, contact your local police service to determine the application process. Must be processed within 6 months of the placement start date.
  • A TB test form completed by your doctor. Must be processed within six months of your placement start date.

How long are my documents valid?
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) form: A new VSS is required for each placement course.
  • TB Test  form: A new TB test required for each placement course.
  • Certificate in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C: Two to three years, depending on certifying agency.
  • Ontario Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training in 4 Steps: Valid for duration of ECS program.

  • Friday, Sept. 13

Placement dates:

  • Block: Sept. 23  to Oct. 25

  • Three days per week: week of Sept. 23 to week of Nov. 11

*Note: This semester will include a study week, during which you will not attend placement.

Winter 2020*

Non-academic documents due:

  • Monday, Jan. 6

Placement dates:

  • Block: Jan. 13 to Feb. 7

  • Three days per week: week of Jan. 13 to week of March 2

Spring 2020

Placement dates:

  • Block: April 27 to May 22
  • Three days per week: week of April 13 to week of May 5

Summer 2020
