Third-year field placement: Part-time program

Course: CCLD 363 Field Education III

Build on your experience and training in the field of early childhood by working with children who may have identified disabilities. You will be directly involved in assessing the abilities of children with exceptionalities, and planning and implementing activities that are developmentally appropriate.

Put into practice what you have learned in the classroom about adapting a program that builds on a child's strengths and is responsive to their learning needs. At the same time, you will continue focusing on building supportive building responsive and supportive relationships with families, colleagues and community members.

Your placement options include:

  • early primary classrooms
  • hospitals 
  • early learning and care programs
  • specialized programs for children with disabilities
  • Ryerson Early Learning Centre
  • Gerrard Resource Centre

Your third-year field education placement will take place for 20 full days.  

Note: the prerequisites for this course are CLD 262, CLD 212, CLD 241 or Direct Entry, and the corequisite is CCLD 342.

Evaluation

You will be evaluated by your field educator at the midterm and at the end of your placement. You will also evaluate your own performance at the midterm and at the end of your placement. Check out a sample field evaluation form. All evaluations are completed electronically.

You will have access to the evaluation system once your placement begins.

Course documents

Students will complete three course documents, listed below, and follow this protocol:

  • complete them by hand (not digitally)
  • print them on white letter-sized paper
  • the first two forms remain at the placement site for the duration of the placement
  • the third form is submitted electronically to the Faculty Advisor after the first placement day

Non-academic documentation

To participate in this placement course, you must obtain the following forms:

  • Vulnerable Sector Screening form from the police service in the municipality where you permanently reside. If you live permanently in the city of Toronto, applications are obtained from the Field Education Coordinator. If your permanent residence is outside of Toronto, contact your local police service to determine the application process. Must be processed within 6 months of the placement start date.
  • A TB test form completed by your doctor. Must be processed within six months of your placement start date.

You must submit these forms either electronically to the field placement coordinator (Martha Anapliotis at martha.anapliotis@ryerson.ca) or in person to the ECS office (Room KHS-354, Kerr Hall South) by the due date for your semester – see the field education schedule below for details.

How long are my documents valid?
  • Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) form: A new VSS is required for each placement course.
  • TB Test  form: A new TB test required for each placement course.
  • Certificate in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C: Two to three years, depending on certifying agency.
  • Ontario Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training in 4 Steps: Valid for duration of ECS program.
Field education schedule

To be eligible for placement, students are required to review the Information Video for the semester they plan to attend placement.

The link to the video will be sent by the Field Education Coordinator.  Students must request access to receive the link. Information regarding obtaining access will be communicated by email.

Fall 2019*

Non-academic documents due:

  • Friday, Sept. 13

Placement dates:

  • Block: Sept. 23  to Oct. 25

  • Three days per week: week of Sept. 23 to week of Nov. 11

Winter 2020*
