A Message from the Graduate Program Director

Welcome to the Literatures of Modernity MA English Program!

As you will discover, we have taken full advantage of Ryerson's central urban destination to design a program that complements coursework and research with scholarly and professional opportunities - both in Toronto and further afield. Our innovative courses investigate aspects of modernity in literature from cultural, historical, and global perspectives. Students can pursue a major research paper, complete a practicum placement at a literary or cultural institution, and develop competencies as a teaching or research assistant.

A leader in experiential learning, we offer Department resources that include the Modern Literature and Culture Research Centre, the Children's Literature Archive, and the Centre for Digital Humanities. Through involvement with our internationally recognized creative-writing journal, the White Wall Review, students acquire editorial and publishing skills and take part in launch parties, readings, and the annual Word on the Street festival. Ryerson's downtown location enables our program to facilitate practicum placements with organizations like Anansi Press, Book Thug, Penguin, Broken Pencil Magazine, the International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront, PEN, and the Toronto International Film Festival, to name but a few.

Adventurous in spirit and eager to network with like-minded peers, our students have participated in diverse intellectual, creative, and social activities, such as the Dickens Universe at the University of California, Santa Cruz; the Digital Humanities Summer Institute at the University of Victoria, BC; and the Iceland Writers Retreat in Reykjavik, Iceland. Additionally, our students have presented scholarly papers at national and international conferences in places like San Diego, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., New York, Montreal, and the United Kingdom.

I hope you enjoy exploring our website and the program's many scholarly, creative, and professional benefits. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss further what our MA has to offer you.
