When did you graduate?
What was your favourite course/which professor had the biggest impact on you?
Colleen Derkatch defiantly had the biggest impact on me and the course she taught for my capstone seminar was by far my absolute favourite.
What is your favourite book?
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.
Did you pursue anything after graduating from the BA English program? (Or did you do anything while in your undergrad, like a minor)
I graduated with a minor in History. After my undergrad, I enrolled in the Chang School, for the Certificate in Publishing, which is where I found out about an internship with Penguin Random House, and how I started my career!
You now work as a Publicity Assistant at Penguin Random House. What does your role entail?
My role entails a lot. There are three of us on the assistant’s team. Firstly, we look after the 20 plus publicists in the publicity department. Here are a few of the things we do:
Pitch books to the media.
Set up interviews
Manage the internship program (2 interns at a time, on a 3 month rotating basis)
Escort authors to media/interviews
Assist with book launches
Do you have any advice for someone who might want to do what you do?
Enrolling in the Certificate of Publishing program is a great entry way into publishing. The courses are taught by past and current publishing professionals, who can add a unique insight into the industry. As well, once your enrolled, you are put on a mailing list that circulates listings of all the available internships and co-ops with the publishing houses in Ontario!
