Join Positive Space and Professor Marty Fink for a talk that will revisit trans women's archives from the early years of the HIV/AIDS pandemic to think through ongoing strategies for harm reduction and caregiving in response to COVID-19. By looking to trans activism past and present, this talk connects trans legacies of HIV activism to present-day movements in COVID-19 toward Black Lives Matter and defunding the police.

Following the talk, participants will have the opportunity to engage in a discussion facilitated by Professor Fink.

About Marty Fink

Marty Fink is an Assistant Professor in ProCom with a focus on queer and trans studies. Their research and teaching investigates medical narratives toward supporting trans access, decolonization, #BlackLivesMatter, and fat positivity. Fink's first book Forget Burial investigates queer/trans archives and narratives of caregiving (launching in winter 2021 from Rutgers University Press).

Fink also teaches Trans Students and Communication (CMN 230) which is a lower liberal, available to all Ryerson students towards their degree requirement which is offered annually in the winter semester.

About Trans Awareness Month at Ryerson

Trans Awareness Month at Ryerson is an annual initiative led by Positive Space.

Ryerson community members are invited to participate in advocacy and educational events that celebrate, honour and raise the visibility of the trans community. We also honour the memory of trans people whose live were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence on November 20 for Trans Day of Remembrace.

This year’s events were organized in partnership with committee members from the Library, The Catalyst at FCAD, Faculty of Community Services, Faculty of Communication and Design, Athletics, Human Resources, the Academic Success Centre, Internal Audit, Yeates School of Graduate Student and the Office of the Vice-President Administration and Operations.
