A diverse group of people with varying disabilities.

In honour of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), join fellow students, faculty and staff on December 3 to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society. Connect with a community of passionate individuals working to increase awareness of the lived experiences of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.

To begin, Heather Willis (Accessibility Coordinator, Office of the Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion (OVPECI)) will introduce this year’s IDPD theme (external link) , “Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world.”

To follow, you’ll learn about the university’s updated Accessibility Statement of Commitment from Dr. Denise O’Neil Green (Vice-President, Equity and Community Inclusion).

We will then launch the call for submissions to the IDPD Student Gallery, a body of creative works to be submitted by students that express their lived experiences of disability. The online gallery is an annual initiative that promotes greater inclusion on campus as well as increases the understanding of experiences of students with disabilities. We will also hear from one of the past contributors to the gallery who has recently graduated yet continues to work with our university as a member of the Community Student Engagement Group for Accessibility.

To wrap up, participants will be invited to join a discussion about calls to action to advance and champion awareness of disability issues.
