Applications to the $1,000 Viola Desmond Student Bursary now open

Ryerson students who self-identify as Black women are encouraged to apply by Nov. 6 on AwardSpring

Are you or someone you know a current Ryerson student who self-identifies as a Black woman and has been involved as a positive role model and advocate of the Black/African Canadian community? If so, we invite you to apply for the 2021 Viola Desmond Student Bursary, which will award the chosen recipient with $1,000 in December 2020.

This initiative is part of the Viola Desmond Awards and Bursary Program which promotes Black excellence and shines a light on exceptional Black women students at Ryerson. The program is administered by the Black History Awareness Committee each year.

Eligibility criteria 

The bursary applicant must:

  • Self-identify as a woman.
  • Self-identify as Black, African Canadian or have Black/African Canadian ancestry.
  • Be currently enrolled as a student at Ryerson and have clear academic standing (minimum 1.67 cumulative grade point average is required for consideration).
  • Be a positive role model and advocate of the Black/African Canadian community.
  • Have demonstrated involvement in the community through extracurricular activities both on campus and/or in the community.

Students are encouraged to visit AwardSpring to apply. All you need is your Ryerson student number and password to get started.
