Campus Core Revitalization
The Campus Core Revitalization project is an important opportunity to enhance the quality of safe, accessible spaces and implement essential infrastructure upgrades to support the growth and technological demands of the Ryerson community as we move into the next decade. As a key component of our Campus Public Realm Plan, the Campus Core Revitalization project will provide a vibrant and engaging configuration of public spaces, as well as modernize infrastructure to improve the student, faculty, staff and visitor experience.
Design strategies define a signature Ryerson University landscape within the implementation area, with the following key priorities:
- Pedestrian infrastructure: Make permanent the temporary pedestrian-only zone on Gould Street from O’Keefe Lane to Bond Street and clarify the designated zones for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles.
- Accessibility: Improve accessibility by raising the street level to be even with curbs through the pedestrian-only zone and adding two new accessible entrances from Nelson Mandela Walk.
- Community connections: Enhance outdoor event infrastructure and programming space to encourage gathering and community connections.
What’s next for the Campus Core Revitalization?
Last month, we were excited to inform the Ryerson community about the successful completion of key infrastructure upgrades along Nelson Mandela Walk. We are now sharing an update about upcoming work on Victoria Street and the status of Gould Street construction.
We understand that the ongoing nature of these improvements creates disruption and impacts how you move through campus. We thank you for your ongoing patience and support.
New construction on Victoria Street
As part of the next phase of Campus Core Revitalization (CCR), we are moving forward with improvements along the southern part of Victoria Street. These will include:
- substantially widening the sidewalk
- improving sidewalk safety and accessibility by the parking garage entrance
- installing new and improved lighting
- adding networking cable ducts to future-proof our campus and provide pathways for improved connectivity
Temporary partial opening of Gould Street
Ryerson’s contractor is partially opening Gould Street so that east-west pedestrian routes are available. The intersection of Gould Street and Victoria Street will be partially opened, however in the future this may need to change.
- Pedestrians will be able to travel from Yonge Street to Bond Street via the south sidewalk of Gould.
- The fencing will also be reconfigured to ensure that the accessible ramp to the Library Building remains in service during the work.
- The Campus Store will remain open.
Emergency utility repairs
You may have noticed chimney-like structures on Gould Street. These are unrelated to any Ryerson project. Public utility crews from the City of Toronto and Enwave have determined that a major emergency repair project must be undertaken. To complete this emergency repair, Enwave will need to excavate a channel, section by section, along Gould Street.
During these repairs, fencing will be in flux
While the utility companies are working on these repairs, the CCR crews will prioritize their work on the north side of the Gould Street sidewalk with the goal of restoring an east-west path of travel for the length of the street.
Due to the uncertainty regarding the emergency repairs, the schedule for the reopening of Gould Street remains in flux as the engineers for the utilities develop their strategy and schedule within our project zone.
- To minimize impact, Ryerson’s CCR contractor will complete the paving along Gould Street as Enwave fills in each excavated section. As much as possible, portions of Gould Street will be reopened when feasible and safe.
- Accessible entrances and access to the Campus Store will be maintained during all work by Ryerson and public utility crews.
What’s been accomplished so far?
We are pleased that our contractor has successfully completed the key infrastructure upgrades along Nelson Mandela Walk and will soon be completing upgrades along Gould Street. Over the past several months, the team has worked diligently to meet our infrastructure goals within very complex and challenging parameters. They set in place infrastructure for some of the key project initiatives.
Deep excavations were completed and cable duct banks were installed to provide pathways for future technology advancements. These “future-proofing” channels ensure we have the infrastructure to support continuous connectivity improvements as our campus continues to grow and technology demands evolve.
A new concrete ramp and automated door opener were added to the north end of Kerr Hall to create a new accessible entrance. The ramp includes heat tracing — wires embedded under the surface to heat the ramps to reduce ice and snow accumulation in winter.
The foundations have been installed for new and improved pedestrian lighting that will surpass the functionality of our previous light standards. They are also significantly more energy efficient and inline with our commitment to reduce energy consumption.
Workers set in place underground cells that promote tree growth and assist in rainwater management. These soil cells allow air, water, and soil nutrients to reach plant roots which will be instrumental in supporting the health and ecological function of Ryerson’s treescape.
Modernized catch basins were installed along Gould Street that will also divert water to the soil cells for efficient and more environmentally-friendly stormwater management.
Roadways were raised to sidewalk level and paving stones were installed over a bed of concrete to make our pedestrian zone permanent and more accessible, and new concrete benching has been added along Gould Street.
Contribution from the City of Toronto
Ryerson would like to acknowledge the generous contribution of $7 million in funding towards the overall budget of this project from the City of Toronto and the tremendous support from Toronto City Councillor Wong-Tam.
