Gerrard Street Project Site

At 101-111 Gerrard Street East between Mutual Street and Jarvis Street sits a pair of buildings owned by Ryerson University. This site has been recognized as having great potential for redevelopment to improve land use, support the university’s growth and revitalize the public streetscape for a more animated and engaging community experience.

Ryerson has identified this site as an opportunity for a new building that would serve as the new home of the Lincoln Alexander School of Law and provide additional facilities for other university departments. 

Ryerson is aiming to begin the design process in early 2022.

Goals, vision and design principles

Our project team is committed to working collaboratively with the greater Ryerson community — students, faculty, staff and the neighbours who share our urban environment — to create a facility that is inclusive, accessible and community-focused. 

The project is guided by the key principles identified by the Campus Master Plan that were shaped by the input and feedback from the Ryerson community:

  • Promoting vertical growth
  • Designing spaces that reflect diversity, foster social and physical inclusion and support environmental wellbeing
  • Increasing placemaking opportunities in public spaces that animate the street and support initiatives to Indigenize our campus
  • Creating inspirational teaching spaces incorporating sustainable design and flexibility
  • Delivering excellence in building and open space design

As a part of our commitment to the university’s own community-informed Truth and Reconciliation process, an Indigenous-owned design firm has been retained as advisors to help guide the consultation and design process to build inclusive, vibrant spaces that are welcoming to Indigenous community members.

Ryerson is committed to advancing sustainability and the proposed building will incorporate cost-effective, sustainable design principles and target LEED certification.

Frequently asked questions

The size of the building has yet to be determined. Once a designer has been engaged and some preliminary design work is completed, there will be more to say about what size of building is needed.

The project is in its early stage of hiring a design team. At this time it is too early to determine a construction timeline. Timelines are dependent on progress made during the design development, municipal approvals and securing the required funding. 

The university is committed to ensuring that neighbours are notified and consulted on how to mitigate the potential impacts of construction before the work begins.

Ryerson is not intending to include any residential space in this new building.

Ryerson is reaching out to neighbours this year (2021) — before a designer has been selected. Input and feedback from a broad and diverse range of voices representing our community is always critical to the success of our development projects.

The new building will reflect the vision and goals of the Campus Master Plan update of 2020. Efforts will be made to enhance the pedestrian experience through design excellence, accessibility, inclusivity and transparency.

Ryerson’s Request for Proposals from design teams was launched in October 2021. We hope to be able to announce the winning proponent in January 2022 and immediately commence the design process. Concepts may be available by Fall 2022.
