Dirk de Waal is an educator, passionate sustainability activist, and multi-skilled media and events professional with substantial experience spanning over two decades. His industry work in television and event production has taken him across four continents producing over 400 projects in various roles. Within “fashion” education, he facilitates courses in fashion futures, design thinking, event design, fashion promotion, and fashion systems.

 

His pedagogical practice takes an activist, sustainable, values-led approach, unpinned by a student-focused, collaborative, decolonized, and co-curricular path to learning. His research interests in design thinking, fashion promotion, and live event production centres cultural, environmental, economic, and social sustainability first. His work draws on contemplative practices and DIY methodologies such as futuring, subversion, localism, community-led, and activism.
