Travel Advisory: COVID-19

In light of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty around international travel and safety in the foreseeable future, Ryerson University has suspended all university-sanctioned international travel and in-person activities abroad for students until April 30, 2021. This includes faculty-led trips, academic exchanges, competitions, and any student individual/group travel. Cortona 2020

Join Ryerson FCAD's boutique campus for a creative summer in Cortona, Italy!

Students will have the flexibility to gain an understanding of the range of opportunities within the interdisplinary field of creative, media and design industries. Students will have the ability to shape their individual FCAD Cortona experience, supported by academic advising, and the option to choose from a range of course offerings (listed below).

Students will be working closely with subject matter experts in Italy while developing creative skills to advance the interdisplinary field of creative, media and design industries.

Cortona is a historically rich and artistic town, on a hill overlooking Tuscany. It's central location is a remarkable opportunity to explore other surrounding Italian cities like Florence, Rome, Perguia, Assisi, and more.

About Italy

Italy has a rich cultural and historical heritage, where art, design and creativity have been at the centre of it all. In particular, fashion, interiors, performance and more.

The Courses

Six courses focused on design and creativity are being offered in Cortona 2020. The program approaches design as a holistic practice by making and putting your work into the public through learning from seeing and experiencing. This includes new creative approaches to history, art and design.

While earning credits towards their degree, students will have an international, immersive learning experience with a focus on design and creativity. Students will have an opportunity to collaborate across FCAD and with international partners, in the culturally and historically-rich town of Cortona, Italy.

Students will have an opportunity to expand their horizons through personal and professional growth by:
  • Working with other students from across FCAD (collaborative creativity and design)
  • Networking with others (internal and external stakeholders) in the creative fields
  • Experiencing in an international country that essentially, is a competitive professional advantage
Upcoming Cortona 2020 Info Sessions
  • Information sessions will be held in February 2020 (see dates below) to share additional information and answer any real-time questions students interested in attending FCAD Cortona.
  • It is mandatory to attend one of the scheduled information sessions prior to enrolling into FCAD Cortona.

Courses Offered

Students will apply their creativity to the following course offerings with the ability to earn up to three course credits.

Italian Design History

In this experiential course, you’ll learn first-hand about the Italian approach to creativity throughout history. This includes experiential field trips across Tuscany.

  • Duration of Course in Italy: 5 Weeks
  • Course Commitment: Field trips every Friday to Orvieto, Perguia, Rome, Florence and Assisi (cities subject to change)

Visual Narratives: Seeing Cortona

In this course, students will work in interdisciplinary teams to create visual narratives, with original imagery and video, that explores Cortona’s rich history and culture.

  • Duration of Course in Italy: 3 Weeks

Design Solutions Supercourse

Student teams drawn from a range of disciplines work on real-world problems presented by industry and community partners to develop creative, design-based solutions. 

  • Duration of Course in Italy: 2 Weeks
  • Course Commitment: 2-day overnight trip to Florence to attend international menswear fashion trade show, Pitti Uomo, external link, to conduct research on a prospective client and topic. The research is practice-based learning on social responsibility in the fashion industry.
  • GPA Weight: 1.0
  • Course Count: 1.0

The Global Stage

Students from across disciplines will take part in the production of a performance that will occur in Cortona during the international festival, Cortona On The Move, external link.

  • Duration of Course in Italy: 2 Weeks
  • Course Commitment: This course works together with World Theatre and Dance.
  • GPA Weight: 1.0
  • Course Count: 1.0
  • Available to all FCAD students

Program Specific Courses Offered

Students will reimagine the 14th century Girifalco Fortress and selected sites of the town of Cortona through creative and experimental design. They will have an opportunity to present their designs to the jury, City of Cortona, ONTHEMOVE Cultural Association, and the community.

  • Duration of Course in Italy: 7 Weeks
  • Course Commitment: Student exhibition of course projects held at Portico of the Teatro Signorelli; potentialy 2-day trip to Venice Biennale and design workshop with Massimiliano Pinucci (TBC)
  • GPA Weight: 2.0
  • Course Count: 1.0
  • Available to only Interior Design students

Students will work on a performance intensive that explores local areas and develops creative research and practice related to classical theatre in a site specific performance.

  • Duration of Course in Italy: 3 Weeks
  • Course Commitment: Two to three performance, "Scenese from Shakespeare" to occur during Cortona On The Move, external link Festival
  • GPA Weight: 2.0

Eligibility
  • Current full-time FCAD students with CGPA 2.00 or higher are eligible to apply for Cortona 2020.

Design Solutions Supercourse (CRI 815)

You’ll be part of an interdisciplinary team working directly with local community and industry partners, including the City of Cortona, to find innovative solutions to real-world problems related to tourism in Italy. Your solutions will be presented at the Design Innovation Conference. No prerequisite required.

Design Seminar: Italian Design History (IRH 401)

In this experiential course, you will walk down the memory lane of Italian history to explore key breakthroughs in in arts and design innovation. You  will go on six experiential field trips across Tuscany to learn first-hand about the Italian approach to creativity throughout history. No prerequisite required.

Interior Design VII (IRN 700)

Reimagine the 14th-century Girifalco Fortress through creative and experimental design. You will present your design to the City of Cortona, ONTHEMOVE Cultural Association, and members of the community. Available only to Interior Design Students.

  • Unique learning opportunity: Learn about the creative heritage of Italy and participate in field trips across Tuscany curated by local experts.
  • Unleash your creativity: Apply your creative skills working on innovative projects with cultural and industry leaders.
  • Network with top names: Learn from and network with industry leaders including National Geographic, Washington Post, New York Times, Canon, and more!
  • Gain International Experience: Work with local clients on creative projects including the City of Cortona and affiliated organizations.  
  • Access Exclusive Events: Participate in Cortona’s International Photography Festival, external link as well as the Innovation Conference attended by hundreds of professional photographers, journalists, editors, curators, and entrepreneurs from around the world.
  • Get Funding: Eligible to get $2,000 in travel grants through FCAD’s Passport Fund. Details are below.
