Student-led startup at Transmedia Zone acquired by international podcast company
Start-up marketing agency Origins Media Haus co-founded by a trio of FCAD alumni was recently acquired by international podcast company, Quill Inc. The start-up was incubated at FCAD’s Transmedia Zone (TMZ), a community-focused incubator and program series supporting innovative storytelling and thought leadership across entertainment media platforms.
Established in 2018, Origins Media House quickly gained recognition as a young but powerful voice in podcast marketing and video production. Just two years later, the three founding members are now executing their mission at a larger scale and elevating the podcast industry by stepping into new positions at Quill, the world’s first marketplace connecting podcasters with professionals in production, distribution and marketing.
The winding path to success
During their undergraduates studies, Creative Industries alumni Stephanie Andrews (2018) and Alison Osborne (2019) and RTA School of Media alumna Brittany Nguyen (2018), began to lay the groundwork for what would later become Origins Media Haus.“It wasn’t a linear path,” said Andrews, co-founder and CEO of Origins Media Haus and head of production at Quill.
The group first developed Origins Magazine in 2016, an online magazine highlighting the challenges, triumphs and success stories of young entrepreneurs. To tell these stories, the group focused primarily on video and written communication, and soon dabbled into the world of podcasting, offering new possibilities in long-form narrative. “We really fell in love with the podcasting medium,” said Andrews.
After refocusing on the podcasting medium, Origins Magazine was incubated by the Transmedia Zone in 2017. This marked a critical turning point for the group, both in the nature of its business and the shaping of its success. “Now we had mentors and people to help us steer the ship, rather than running it blindly. We had help hitting our goals and staying accountable,” said Andrews.
During their time at TMZ, the founding members of Origins Magazine embraced a newfound passion for podcasting and pivoted into Origins Media House, a podcast and video agency focused on branded content. “We noticed there was a lot of demand for it. And we just kept growing and growing,” said Andrews.
“I didn’t realize it until after graduation but, because it’s such a multidisciplinary program, I’d got very used to having my head in several perspectives and spaces at once.
The end of the beginning
Today, the trio slowly puts the Origins name to rest as they move into newly expanded roles at Quill. The Origins Media Haus team and clients were absorbed into Quill, allowing both teams to merge together to produce top quality content to tell stories for their diverse range of clients. Each still following their individual passions, Alison moves into head of marketing, Stephanie into head of production, and Brittany into head of sound and technical production.
The podcast industry’s exponential growth creates endless possibilities for creative leaders and storytellers with authentic voices to inspire, educate and entertain audiences across the globe. FCAD’s interdisciplinary curriculum aims to prepare and support students as they become leading creators behind up-and-coming mediums.
“I didn’t realize it until after graduation but, because it’s such a multidisciplinary program, I’d got very used to having my head in several perspectives and spaces at once. Now, I have that discipline to think about multiple angles and how they intersect,” said Andrews as she reflected on her time in Creative Industries. “The strength of the program was being able to apply the knowledge directly to my business. That’s what really stuck.”
