Dr. Maher El-Masri Appointed Director for the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing

Dear all, 

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Maher El-Masri as Director in the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing. Dr. El-Masri’s appointment as Director will begin on August 1, 2020 for a three-year term.

Dr. El-Masri is an academic nurse leader who completed his nursing masters (1998) and PhD (2003) degrees from the University of Maryland, School of Nursing in the USA. A Fulbright scholar, Dr. El-Masri’s outstanding performance during his PhD studies at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing earned him the PhD Graduate of the Year Award from the school’s Alumni Association (2003) and the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the Sigma Theta Tau, Pi Chapter (2003). 

Dr. El-Masri comes to the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing at Ryerson University from the College of Nursing at Wayne State University where he served as a professor of Nursing (2019 -2020). He also served as a Professor at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Nursing (2002-2019); where he assumed the roles of Research Coordinator (2005 – 2008), University Research Leadership Chair (2008-2013) and Faculty Research Chair (2013-2018). In addition to his extensive teaching experience in research methods, biostatistics and clinical epidemiology, Dr. El-Masri is known among his students and colleagues as a motivational, supportive, mentor and a prolific writer and scholar. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Nursing Research (CJNR) since 2015. 

During his academic tenure, Dr. El-Masri has made significant contributions to nursing education and research in Canada and beyond. In recognition of his many contributions, he was the recipient of a number of prestigious awards that include his induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (2019) and the 2012 the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario Leadership in Nursing Research Award. He also received the Canada150 Community Service Medal (2017) in recognition of his contributions to the broader society. 

Please join me in congratulating Dr. El-Masri on his appointment as Director of the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing in the Faculty of Community Services at Ryerson University. I very much look forward to working with him.
