Sue Williams Excellence in Teaching Award

The Sue Williams Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes instructors for their outstanding performance and dedication to teaching graduate and undergraduate students in the Faculty of Community Services.

Eligibility
  • Nominees must be RFA or contract lecturers at the Faculty of Community Services.
  • Individuals who have received the award within the last five years are not eligible for nomination.
Who can submit a nomination?
  • Undergraduate and graduate students at the Faculty of Community Services can submit a nomination.
Award criteria

The nominee should demonstrate excellence in three of the following areas:

  • Communicates effectively in the classroom, studio, field practice or laboratory.
  • Engages students in the subject using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Influences development of students’ intellectual and critical thinking.
  • Inspires students as a role model for personal and/or professional development.
  • Maintains an approachable and accessible stance towards students.
Nomination process
  1. Obtain the nominee's permission.
  2. Complete the nomination package as described below.
  3. Submit the nomination package via the Online Nomination Portal.
  4. Nominee receives confirmation email with link to provide online consent before the deadline.
Nomination package

A completed nomination includes:

  • A summary (maximum 150 words) of the nominee’s excellence in teaching, suitable for reading as a citation. This can be prepared in collaboration with the nominee.
  • A nomination brief (maximum 500 words) describing examples of the how the instructor demonstrates excellence in three of the following areas:
    • Communicates effectively in the classroom, studio, field practice or laboratory.
    • Engages students in the subject using a variety of teaching methods (give specific examples of these methods.)
    • Influences development of students’ intellectual and critical thinking.
    • Inspires students as a role model for personal and/or professional development.
    • Maintains an approachable and accessible stance towards students.
  • Include your program name and current year of study in the nomination brief.
  • Three to five testimonials (maximum 150 words) from fellow students and alumni.
Selection process

The FCS Learning and Teaching Committee evaluates nominations for the Sue Williams Excellence in Teaching Award and selects an award recipient. The committee may decide not to present an award in a given year.

Important dates
  • Nominations open on February 1, 2018.
  • Nominations close on February 28, 2018.
