Join the Financial Mathematics Research Group

Group of Mathematics students and faculty.
Come research with us

The Financial Mathematics Research Group at Toronto Metropolitan University is one of the largest of its kind in Canada. We were one of the first universities to introduce a Financial Mathematics curriculum. We’re now at the forefront of research specialized for financial markets.

Who Can Join the Group?

We actively seek new members to conduct research in Financial Mathematics. Typically, our members are current Master's or PhD students or postdoctoral fellows. Our faculty members have a proven track record of supervisory success, with alumni members now working successfully in the financial sector.

We also welcome undergraduate members. In contrast to many other programs, our students can already start researching during their Bachelor degree program. Some are enrolled in an undergraduate thesis course supervised by a faculty member. Others join as volunteer or paid research assistants during the academic year or during summer terms.

Are there requirements to conduct research with us?

Prospective members should have a solid, mature background in mathematics, although specialty in Financial Mathematics is not mandatory. You'll gain contextual knowledge as you work on your chosen research topic. To thrive in a research environment, the most successful candidates already have certain qualities: they tend to be committed, intellectually curious and self-motivated to think independently.

What's it like working within the group?

Alumni who have researched with us often comment on the high-quality supervision they enjoy with our professors. If you're new to research, it often takes months before students can work independently. Until you reach that point, you’ll often meet 1:1 for mentoring with professors and you may work with other highly qualified personnel (HQPs) with more experienced in research. They'll help you build solid skills in Financial Mathematics.

Our Supervisory Successes

Throughout their careers, our faculty have had very successful supervision experience. In particular, some of students supervised by our faculty have gone on to work in academia, in corporations such as TD Bank and CIBC Mellon, or continued doing research at other schools worldwide. Supervision by our faculty was also recognized by first places in world-wide competitions such as the International Atlantic Economic Society Best Undergraduate Paper Award (external link, opens in new window)  and Rotman International Trading Competition.
