Communication and Culture PhD student shares advice for a successful application

Gabriele Aroni

“The work involved in applying for the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarship was definitely substantial, and required a significant amount of time in addition to the courses I was taking and teaching in my first year of doctoral studies.

“The most difficult part of the process, aside from securing reference letters, is writing a concise yet convincing application that shows you have a clear plan for your dissertation, despite being in the initial phases of the PhD. This challenge, however, helped me fast-track the planning of my PhD, and was of immense help in the following months. Demonstrating how one’s skills and knowledge relate to the thesis and that the goals of the research are clear and obtainable within the foreseen timeframe have, in my opinion, been essential in securing the scholarship.”
