Message from the Program Director

Welcome to the Graduate Program in Immigration and Settlement Studies (MA-ISS) webpage.

Immigration processes continue to be of great importance within countries of the Global North and Global South. Studying the economic, social, cultural, political and historical effects of immigration on a particular society remains a priority. Canada has recognized that immigration has been and continues to be an essential aspect of the nation-building process.

As a free-standing interdisciplinary graduate program, the Immigration and Settlement Graduate Program (ISS) welcomes students from different academic backgrounds and professional experiences. It provides space and opportunity to strengthen and expand such experiences with different kinds of knowledge to understand policies, institutional practices, different immigrant communities, historical and present mobility patterns in Canada and different parts of the world. The ISS Program prepares students for a career in the immigration and settlement sector, government, academia and activism.

The ISS Program works closely with Ryerson Centre for Immigration and Settlement (RCIS)  and Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration (CERC). The faculty affiliated with the Program, who teach and supervise our students, are renowned nationally and internationally for their research and teaching excellence.  The faculty members come from different academic departments and professional schools with different experiences, research interests and theoretical perspectives that allow for an excellent student experience.

The Program is located in Toronto, one of the most diverse cities in North America; this location is an excellent setting to study and experience the immigration and settlement processes.

I encourage you to visit our website and learn more about our program admission requirements.
