Human Rights 101

This eLearning module provides a basic understanding of rights and responsibilities under the Ontario Human Rights Code. It includes the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Human Rights 101 eLearning course (4rd edition, 2020) which provides an interactive introduction to the Ontario Human Rights Code. It also introduces community members to the policies and services that exist at the university to protect and promote human rights.

Enroll in the Human Rights 101 eLearning course
  • Step 1. If prompted, sign in with your my.torontomu login credentials.
  • Step 2. Review the Course Description and click on "Enroll in Course" to complete enrollment.
  • Step 3. Click “Open Course” and then click “Content” to advance to the eLearning Table of Contents.
  • Note: After enrolling, the course can be accessed from the D2L Brightspace homepage where it will be listed under "My Courses."

Human Rights and the Duty to Accommodate

Learn what accommodation means, why it’s important to remove barriers to full participation and integration at the University, and about students’ rights to accommodation with respect to their creed, disability, gender identity and expression, sex (including pregnancy) and family status.

Also, learn about the relevant university policies and understand the roles and responsibilities of students, Academic Accommodation Support (AAS), Teaching Assistants, Instructors and Faculty, in the accommodation process. Finally, this module explains the duty to accommodate, the principles of accommodation, and the standard of undue hardship, and how accommodation is a shared responsibility.

Human Rights Live Online: Preventing and responding to human rights issues in the digital classroom

In this session, the Human Rights Services team will provide an overview of the university’s human rights policies and how they apply to online learning environments. 

They will also address:

  • TMU’s human rights framework (including human rights policies).
  • How to apply these policies within online learning environments.
  • Key responsibilities of faculty and instructors in managing online learning environments and responding to incidents that may occur.
