FALL 2020: Image Arts COVID-19 Updates

The following adjustments to IMA access to be implemented for the week of October 19th - October 23rd are:

· IMA and KHS buildings are open

· Cage is open Monday-Friday

· Services are available

Many new procedures and protocols have been implemented for the coming year to ensure the safety of the students, staff and faculty of the School of Image Arts. These follow extensive review and consultation with Ryerson’s Environmental Health & Safety unit and are aligned  with public health guidelines. Students and employees are expected to adhere to all safety requirements, facility signage and direction while on the premises. Protocols will be strictly enforced.    

  • The only entrance is at the main doors at the corner of Gould and Bond Streets. This will be locked at all times and your one-card is required for access. Monday - Fridays, 8:30am to 5:00pm.
  • Access to the IMA building will be restricted to assigned times for production courses, and for pre-reserved times for Cage and digital print pick up.

  • Upon arrival, proceed to the Check-In desk in the IMA Commons - show your one-card and provide the course number that you are attending.
  • Face masks must be worn and social distancing must be practiced at all times inside IMA, as per TPH and Ryerson guidelines: https://www.ryerson.ca/policies/policy-list/face-mask-policy/
  • Frequent handwashing is recommended as a critical means to stop the spread of Covid-19.  In addition to available washroom facilities, hand sanitizer stations and sanitizing wipe stations will be located throughout the building.
  • Once checked in, please go directly to your destination. You may be required to wait until your class starts in a dedicated area in the Commons.
  • Please follow the directional signage for stairs, elevators, to classrooms and production facilities, and exits.
  • There will be signage in classrooms and studios indicating cleaning protocols.
  • Exits are located via the south stairwell and northwest stairwell, signage will be posted.
  • Limit your entrance and exits to break times specified by your instructor.
  • There will be limited seats in the first floor study area for students who require wifi access and this is by reservation only.
  • Lockers will not be available for the fall term. Coat racks will be available for use on each floor.
  • To gain access to the Equipment Cage all students must sign a Technical Operations Agreement. Incoming 1st year students are also required to complete WHMIS training (available through D2L) and provide a copy of the certificate.   • Pick-ups and returns are by appointment only.  All equipment must be reserved at least one day in advance using the online booking system, which can be accessed at https://wchout.ccs.ryerson.ca/sso/patron#/.  Login with your Ryerson credentials.
  • Reservations are requests only. Once the booking has been confirmed, you will receive a confirmation from the Cage.
  • Pick-ups and returns are scheduled fifteen minutes apart.  You will be expected to arrive promptly for your time slot and sign in at the IMA main entrance reception desk.  If you miss the assigned time, your appointment may be delayed or rescheduled.
  • Sanitizing procedures -  All equipment will be cleaned by staff upon return, followed by a short quarantine period for some specialized equipment.

Film lab order forms will be online this year. A link to the form will be provided by your production professor and will also be posted outside the lab & equipment cage. These are the following procedures:

  • Payment for lab orders will be automatically deducted from student One Cards.
  • Film Prints will be suspended for the year or until further notice.
  • Digital transfers of films will be automatically emailed to students.
  • Exposed negatives are to be dropped off for processing at the lab dropbox inside the IMA front entrance. Identification must be written directly on EACH negative's box, including NAME, STUDENT ID #, and if depositing multiple rolls, ROLL #.
  • Both your online order form AND your exposed films must both be received anytime before 8:30 AM Monday or Wednesday morning deadlines or the order will not be handled.
  • The pick up procedure for processed negatives to be confirmed.
  • Open Space will not be open as a drop-in fabrication studio for the Fall 2020 term.        
  • The Technician will be available for online student consultations through Google Chat, Google Meet or Zoom. Please make arrangements by email to joseph.lammirato@ryerson.ca
  • Students will be able to take out selected Open Space tools to complete projects off campus following consultation with the Technician.

Should Ryerson implement temperature checks at building entrances?

The Public Health Threats committee has assessed the need and applicability of conducting temperature screening checks for employees and students returning to campus. The committee is reluctant to recommend mandatory temperature screening for the following reasons:

  • Temperature screening cannot detect all cases of COVID-19. Not all infected individuals present with fever symptoms or develop fever, and they may not have fever early in the course of infection or illness, such as during the incubation period or just before other symptoms begin.
  • Individuals can use fever-reducing or pain-reducing medication, such as for headaches which can mask the symptoms for fever, particularly if they are concerned about consequences of not coming to work. 
  • Temperature checks give a false sense of reassurance because they could miss individuals who are asymptomatic or presymptomatic.
  • Fevers are intermittent and can fluctuate throughout the day.
  • The accuracy of temperature checking depends on the type of thermometer being used and the person administering the test. Oral, ear and rectal thermometers are most accurate but not recommended or practical for screening large numbers of people due to the increased risk of transmission. 
  • Non-contact self-screening carries the lowest risk and minimizes person-to-person contact.
  • Screening is considered a medical test and should be administered by qualified personnel.
  • Screening by non qualified personnel can lead to person-to-person transmission. 
  • Previous temperature screening checks with thermal scanners during SARS revealed that no cases of SARS were detected using this method.
  • Recommendations on preventative measures will continue to follow public health guidelines. Temperature screening is not being recommended at this time.
  • WHO, CDC and Public Health Agency of Canada are not recommending temperature screening as such measures require substantial investments for what may provide little benefits.
  • Concerns over privacy and the retention of personal medical information must be considered.

Based on these reasons, the university is advising that all individuals understand the symptoms of COVID-19 and self-monitor their health daily, conduct self-assessments/questionnaires using the government of Ontario's COVID-19 self assessment tool and follow the instructions of any self assessment tools to seek medical attention or get tested as required. The university is also adopting principles for worker wellness by ensuring that workers feel safe to “stay at home if feeling unwell” and flexible sick leave policies to discourage workers with COVID-19 symptoms from coming to campus. Should Ryerson implement mandatory COVID-19 testing for students returning to campus?

The Public Health Threats committee has assessed the need and applicability of mandating  COVID-19 testing to validate student health in students returning to campus. The committee is reluctant to recommend mandatory COVID-19 testing for the following reasons:

  • COVID-19 testing may not detect all cases of COVID-19 particularly in the early course of infection or illness, while viral loads are low.
  • Current PCR testing has a limited detection efficacy.
  • Testing is a one off procedure that will not provide guarantees that those that were tested will not get infected with COVID-19 within the day or days following the test.
  • Testing and tracking of tests would be difficult to implement across campus as more students return to campus in various programs.
  • Mandating testing when students show no symptoms would be taxing on already taxed public health units.
  • Testing should be conducted based on the risk level of the workplace - universities are considered very low risk based on health care and long term care facilities.
  • Concerns over privacy and the retention of personal medical information must be considered as well as human rights and equity considerations.
  • The Toronto Public Health COVID-19 Guidance for Workplaces and Businesses specifies that there are no clearance tests required for employees returning to work. This is also the case following a COVID-19 positive case who has completed 14 day isolation and cleared of symptoms. 
  • Ryerson is not currently mandating testing for it’s employees and to ensure equity, we are not differentiating or making different concessions for our students.

Masks on campus: Distribution and usage

To: All employees

With remote work continuing until at least January 2021, in July the university implemented a Face Mask Policy for faculty, staff and students required to be on campus. The policy outlines that:

  • A Mask or Face Covering must be worn in enclosed spaces where the public is permitted entry.
  • A Mask or Face Covering must be worn in all other enclosed spaces unless designated or prescribed by the university.

As you review this information, please keep in mind that we all have a role to play in keeping our community safe and limiting the spread of COVID-19. At the same time, it’s important to be mindful that we are all adjusting to the new normal of these important and necessary safety guidelines.

Any employees working on campus should review and follow the guidelines outlined. Please practice empathy and understanding with our fellow community members, providing helpful and kind reminders when needed.

Each employee working on campus will receive 2 cloth masks

Ryerson is supplying all employees with two cloth masks. Leaders have been provided with distribution processes to obtain masks for their area. If you are required to work on campus, please contact your leader.

Frequently asked questions about mask use

Are masks required in classrooms?

Yes, students, faculty and staff are required to wear masks in classrooms unless a policy exemption applies. Review policy exemptions online.

Are faculty required to wear masks while teaching?

Faculty are required to wear masks while teaching unless you are able to deliver the class behind a physical barrier while also maintaining a physical distance of six feet from students at all times or a policy exemption applies.

Are masks required in spaces designated for individual use (e.g. an office space, a single study room)?

Faculty, staff and students are not required to wear masks in spaces designated for individual use, as long as they are the only person in the space.

If an additional person/people enter the space, then all individuals in the space are required to wear masks until the individual is alone in the space again.

Are masks required in shared office or academic spaces?

Yes, masks are required in shared office or academic spaces, unless a policy exemption applies.

Our area is working on setting up a physical barrier as a safety precaution to limit transmission risk. Do we still have to wear masks?

Please contact Environmental Health and Safety who will work with you to complete a risk assessment to determine when and if mask use is still required.

Temporary removal of masks to receive and provide services

Can I take my mask off to eat?

Masks may be temporarily removed when eating or drinking in an area designated for dining.

What should I do if my colleague/student/employee has removed their mask?

If needed, individuals can temporarily remove their masks if it’s preventing them from being understood, as long as the individual maintains a physical distance of six feet from others.

If someone’s mask has been temporarily removed, or they’ve forgotten to put it on, lead with a gentle and helpful reminder to put it back on.
