Security Incidents FAQ

Why am I getting duplicate Security Incidents notices? I also seem to get Security Incident notice e-mails at my personal email account (gmail, hotmail, etc.).

A: Security Incidents are only sent to email addresses.  Some community members have forwarded their email to more than one other e-mail account or may be retaining a copy in their Ryerson account.  If you are receiving duplicate Security Incident notices in your inbox, please contact CCS. Students should call 416-979-5000 ext. 6840 or write Faculty and staff should call 416-979-5000 ext. 6806 or write

Why isn't the Security Incident web page mobile device friendly?

A: This is an identified issue that we expect to improve on soon.

I can't remember my login information so I can’t opt out of receiving these Security Incident notices.

A: Click on the “Can’t log in?” link located next to the login fields for assistance and instructions.

Why am I receiving Security Incident emails?

A: Security & Emergency Services (SES) reports certain incidence on and near campus within two business days of the incident being reported to SES. The newly expanded security email distribution system means that all students, staff and faculty now receive Security Incidents directly to their inbox, rather than opting in to receive notices, as before.  As a result, Ryerson community members are receiving increased communications.

Why is the email a link and not a full text report?

A: Embedding the link, rather than inserting text or the formatted Security Incident as it is found on the security website, allows SES to send the Security Incidents to over 100,000 recipients faster and without technical difficulty

How do I unsubscribe?

A: Users can access "Manage My Online Resources" at, and then choose "Opt-out from Mass Mail Lists" to unsubscribe from the Mass Security Incident Distribution List.

Why does the university not differentiate the different degrees of sexual assault?

A: We include enough information to keep our community members reasonably informed of the dates, times, and general locations of incidents as well as details of any suspects.
We do not disclose information that would unduly impact the identity or privacy of the survivors, or the integrity of investigations.

I know of several instances where laptops and/or smartphones have been stolen and no Security Incident has been sent out. Why?

A: Not all crimes are reported by Security Incidents. Security Incidents focus on violent incidents and incidents of hate promotion.

Is the campus safe?

A: Ryerson campus is safe; Ryerson University has in place comprehensive security measures that are regularly reviewed.

What else is Ryerson doing to ensure the safety of the Ryerson community?

A: In addition to our newly expanded email distribution system, Ryerson Security posts all Security Incidents to the portal and will continue to post all Security Incidents to the Integrated Risk Management website.
