Marco A. Fiola is a Professor in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, in the Faculty of Arts, in addition to being Adjunct Professor at the School of Translation and Interpretation, University of Ottawa, and at the School of Translation, Glendon College (York University). Prior to joining Ryerson University in 2006, he was Associate Professor at the Université du Québec en Outaouais. A Certified Translator and Terminologist, he is a Board Member of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Ontario. Professor Fiola is a Faculty Member of the M.A. in Immigration and Settlement Studies and PhD in Policy Studies.
His research interests include translation theory, and his main areas of investigation are translation quality assessment, language barriers to public services, translator and interpreter training and certification, as well as translation quality assessment. He has published extensively on those topics, and his most recent publications include the English-Tamil Legal Glossary, published through the Law Research Centre at Ryerson University, and the third edition of La traduction raisonnée, a textbook for professional translators, with its Livre du maître, both published by the University of Ottawa Press. He also translated and adapted, from Italian to French (University of Ottawa Press), Federica Scarpa’s seminal work La traduzione specializzata. Un approccio didattico professionale (Hoepli).
Professor Fiola holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree in Translation (Université de Montréal) and a Diplôme d’études approfondies in Sciences du langage as well as a PhD in Translation Studies (Paris III – Sorbonne Nouvelle).
Professor Fiola will be on sabbatical leave from September 1, 2019 to August 30, 2020.
