Spanish Pathway

Once you have taken the Placement Test, you will know your language proficiency level. Your first course is the one listed for your score in the Score Guide. Students will then progress through the levels, as below.

It is not possible to go backwards on the pathway, to courses of lower difficulty. 

Prerequisites vary, and are listed in the Undergraduate calendar. 

 

INTRODUCTORY LEVEL

  • SPN 101: Introductory Spanish I

  • SPN 201: Introductory Spanish II

 

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL

ADVANCED LEVEL

  • SPN 501: Advanced Spanish I*
  • SPN 504: Spanish Language and Culture Through Films

  • SPN 506: Spanish Audiovisual Translation
  • SPN 706: Spanish Graphic Novels
  • SPN 601: Advanced Spanish II

    *Students who complete SPN 501 with a B+ or higher may advance to any course in the Thematic Level that lists SPN 601 as a prerequisite. You may do this concurrently with SPN 601 or skip SPN 601 altogether.

 

THEMATIC LEVEL

Most courses at this level can be taken in any order - check prerequisites in the Undergraduate calendar.

  • SPN 507: English-Spanish Translation I; SPN 607: English-Spanish Translation II;  SPN 707: Spanish-English Translation
  • SPN 515: Introduction to Business Spanish (Not available to native Spanish speakers)
  • SPN 704: Latin American Culture I; SPN 804: Latin American Culture II
  • SPN 705: The Boom in Latin American Literature
  • SPN 708: Contemporary Spanish Fiction
  • SPN 710: History of the Spanish Language
