Biography

As a freelancer, entrepreneur and emerging artist for the past five years, I have created multiple installation shows and performances for a number of different types of audiences and venues. Most recently I have received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council for an upcoming new media installation. I love learning what technicians and other people do and problem solving how to fit it all together in a bigger real world project, when there are limitations on time, money, skills and that it has to fulfill client’s/company’s needs.

Why Digital Media?

I look forward to learning the newest technologies through the program’s labs and other resources. I expect to hone my skills: pitching ideas, leading and participating in teams, better understanding the principles and successful practices of entrepreneurial digital businesses and expanding my networks, communities and contacts. I’m not looking to make work in a bubble—my artistic practice and work should be complementary and based on real world applications.

Research

Major Research Project: "Data Visualization"

As an award-winning digital-media artist who has shown internationally, Hoicka turns conceptual ideas into narratives anyone can understand. At Ryerson, she is gaining additional interactive programming and business skills to work on big data visualization projects with marketing experts. First she will interview marketing professionals about how big data visualization can improve data analysis and communicate opportunities to senior management. Then she will examine ways to communicate big data that immediately resonate with people, create tangible experiences for viewers, and focus on senior executive mindsets. Finally, she will explore how people respond to visual information emotionally, how they understand conceptual information, etc., and new ways of communicating big data to mass audiences.
