Textile/Surface Design and Augmented Reality

Biography:

My interest in digital media was kick-started in the first semester of my undergraduate journey while enrolled in a course overviewing the science of textiles. My curiosity was piqued by surface design and intelligent textiles, and I later enrolled in a textile design course to gain hands-on experience with industry specific software. Through the completion of this course, I gained not only the ability to create original motifs and patterns, but also an awareness of the various applications for surface design that extend beyond the textile industry. Building on this realization, I devoted my senior project to researching how personality can be visually communicated through the elements of design which form prints and patterns. My interest has continued to expand since graduation and has segued into a desire to explore the potential applications for augmented reality in surface design. My employment in the fashion industry has exposed me to a wide variety of products which, I believe, are not taking advantage of their ability to host powerful digital experiences.

Why Digital Media?

The presence of wearable technology and intelligent textiles in fashion continues to intensify. The once clear distinction between art and fashion and science and technology has blurred, and may very well become indistinguishable in the coming years. A foundation in digital media will provide me with a competitive edge for the fashion industry within the context of a digital economy.
