Biography:

Since I was little I can remember having a wide variety of interests. From athletics to nature, gaming, and visual art, I can accurately say this cumulation of interests brought me to where I am today. In highschool I developed the interest to one day create my own business, and this led me to working for a new small-business in my hometown. After being introduced to the sad reality of waste and a lack of environmental stewardship in the food industry, I made the decision to pursue environmental science and sustainable agriculture. It was important for me to have an understanding as why such issues occurred, and move forward in my career with a pledge to promote sustainability.

Along my undergraduate journey however, I finally had the opportunity to explore personal projects and passions outside my degree. A personal project I have taken on came to me through a discussion with a rugby teammate over a pint. The idea was the result of discussing a lack of LGBT+ community opportunities, not just through social media, film, and art, but genuine social gatherings for LGBT+ people. Apart from the Trent University campus, there is no safe space for LGBT+ people in Peterborough, despite the fact it is a very accepting town. My teammate and I decided we would begin a social media account that would connect local LGBT+ members through YouTube and Instagram and help people share stories and find a virtual safe space. Beyond the Bow was started in hopes that our virtual safe space would one day translate into more physical ones and this is what I continue to work towards to this day.

Why Digital Media?

My long-term goals, which this degree can help immensely with, is to continue expanding on Beyond the Bow by hosting our own events, creating an app and website, selling our own merchandise, and even opening our own café/bar storefront. These ideas have come from the connections that have been made through Beyond the Bow thus far, and I am so excited to see where it leads. My business idea is a huge motivator in my decision to apply for this program and it is something I will be working towards throughout my time in MDM. This degree offers opportunities not just in business marketing and social media, but technology development, design and innovation, all of which apply to my long-term goals with Beyond the Bow. I want to learn how to design, develop and manage an app and website, and use design strategies such as functional and user-centric design to be successful. I want to apply all the knowledge I have already gained, and all the knowledge I will gain throughout this program to ensure Beyond the Bow’s success as well as any other pursuits I may take.
