Business Strategy Internship (BSI)

In partnership with Canadian academic institutions, Mitacs, external link, opens in new window is launching the Business Strategy Internship (BSI), external link, opens in new window program. The award will provide $10,000 per student to undertake a 16-week strategic project with an organization in Canada. Projects will be structured to carry out a strategic analysis of an organization to help them restore or modify their business operations in a new business environment disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the project, Mitacs provides online professional development opportunities to students.

The primary goals of the program are to:

  • Provide students with the opportunity to apply business concepts and theories to real world decision-making
  • Provide support to an organization that needs additional assistance in modifying its business operations to adapt to the new economic reality
  • Build and strengthen connections and collaborations between organizations and academic institutions
  • Build students’ skills (communication, problem solving, innovation, resilience, managing complexity, navigating change, business continuity planning, etc.) and apply their education through an experiential learning opportunity
  • Provide new and broadened training and career opportunities for students by expanding their network with faculty, businesses and community

Partners must complete the form by

February 12, 2021

Students must be hired before

March 5, 2021

Projects must start on

July 15, 2021

Partner Organization

  • Company with full-time employees OR not-for-profit organization
  • Hire student on or before March 5, 2021 and have student join organization on or before July 15, 2021
  • Provide $5,000 in funding for each internship
  • Complete required sections of the Mitacs RAP
  • Meet weekly with student (virtual meetings are acceptable)
  • Sign off on the student project
  • Complete an exit survey at the end of the program

  2. Review applications and conduct interviews to select successful candidate
  3. Students and/or TRSM Graduate Careers will help you connect with a Faculty Supervisor
  4. Once Mitacs approves the internship project, they will then invoice your organization
  5. Funds will be paid to the student via Ryerson University; therefore organizational partners do not need to set up the selected BSI interns as employees in their organization (i.e. no taxes, EI, CPP, etc. payments required)

Students

  • Registered undergraduate or graduate student at a Canadian academic institution
  • Not a current, active participant in another Mitacs program
  • Able to start internship on or before July 15, 2021
  • Apply for opportunities through the Graduate Careers job board
  • Interview with the partner organization
  • Complete required sections of the Mitacs RAP
  • Meet weekly with supervisors to report on the progress of their project. Virtual meetings are acceptable
  • Complete an exit survey at the end of the program reporting on skills developed and providing feedback on the program experience
  • Complete a Final Report in the last week of the award summarizing the work that was completed during the internship

Academic supervisor

  • Faculty member at a participating Canadian university who is eligible to hold Tri-Agency funds
  • Complete required sections of the Mitacs RAP
  • Meet weekly with student (virtual meetings are acceptable)
  • Sign off on the student project
  • Complete an exit survey at the end of the program
