Spotlight

Mucahit Cevik is drawn to mathematical models that make systems and processes better, especially in health care. “It’s important to me that my work has social benefit,” he says, “and health care is an area that affects all of us.”

Cevik’s mathematical modelling has led to systems that improve cancer screening and deliver radiation treatment more accurately to tumours while sparing healthy tissues. He has also developed operational systems in hospitals used to make assessments about the optimal length of stay for patients in emergency departments, which improves care and creates efficiencies for staff.

The increase in patient data collection has generated a need for more industrial engineers like Cevik. “This is an exciting field for students to get into,” he says. “It’s constantly evolving, and you know you are helping people get better service and more accurate treatment.”
