The next time you buy something, hold the product in your hand and think about how it got there. Between you and the raw materials it came from, there is a supply chain – a network of suppliers, distributors, manufacturers, marketers and retailers. In a global economy obsessed with efficiency and cost reduction, industrial engineers like Saman Amin, an expert in supply chain management, are in high demand.

Amin develops mathematical models that reveal how supply chains can be more efficient. For example, he can assess the relationship between a network of suppliers and their locations by adjusting parameters to determine the optimal geographic distribution. 

However, his expertise isn’t limited to manufacturing. By using mathematical models, Amin and his team are also analyzing the inputs and outputs of Canadian universities to determine how they can more efficiently achieve their objectives. “I love translating mathematical models into concrete solutions that organizations can use,” he says.
