Spotlight

Vincent Chan believes that a drive to improve or perfect lies at the heart of engineering. “I see it in my students,” he says. “They start with questions about how something works and quickly get to how it could work better. It’s an inclination that all engineers have.”

Chan’s family members have this inclination, too. His grandfather was a civil engineer and his older brothers work in the electrical and chemical disciplines. As a mechanical engineer, Chan is particularly interested in advanced manufacturing and mechatronics, such as using machine vision to regulate quality control, with the ultimate goal of making manufacturing processes cheaper, faster and better. “I guess the family business is fixing and improving things.”
