Crisis in Catalonia: Why does it matter?

Why does Catalonia want independence, and how will it affect the European Union? Catalan pro-independence forces and the Spanish central government have been on a collision course, building toward Spain’s worst political crisis since the end of the Franco dictatorship. Political leaders both in Catalonia and Madrid have painted themselves into a corner.

A lasting and peaceful solution to the crisis in Catalonia is likely to remain elusive as long as Catalonia and the central authorities in Madrid refuse to compromise. The question is why? Only by understanding the historical roots of the crisis can we answer those crucial questions.
