Sustainability is a core value of Ryerson University.

Friday, September 27, 2019 marks Climate Day of Action (external link) , which includes coordinated climate strikes taking place in cities around the world.

Sustainability is a core value of Ryerson University. As stated in our Academic Plan, “the university takes responsibility for its shared future with the broader community, and aims to pursue environmental, social and economic sustainability through its programs, SRC (scholarly, research and creative) activity, policies, built environment, and fiscally sound operations.”

Young people have a long history of leading transformative social movements and we understand that some of our students will want to participate in the Climate Day of Action activities taking place in Toronto. Ryerson University supports this, including their involvement in the climate strike. We stand behind those who are engaging in conversations around climate change, who are undertaking important research, and who are taking part in actions to address climate change locally and globally.

Students who wish to participate in Climate Day of Action activities are asked to speak with their instructors in advance about making alternative arrangements to receive course content, or to make up missed tests, exams, or class assignments.

The university strongly encourages all faculty and contract lecturers to be flexible in accommodating Ryerson students who wish to participate in events on Friday.

Staff members who wish to participate in Climate Day of Action activities are encouraged to make individual arrangements with their managers.

The university also has a responsibility to ensure that academic activities continue as scheduled. Please note that Ryerson University will remain open on September 27, with classes, labs, assignments and tests moving forward as planned.
