Ryerson’s Faculty of Law welcomes six cross-appointees from the Ted Rogers School of Management and the Faculty of Arts. Top row (from left): Gil Lan, Pnina Alon-Shenker and Graham Hudson. Bottom row (from left): Timothy J. Bartkiw, Kernaghan Webb and Alex Wellington.

Set to open its doors September 2020, Ryerson’s Faculty of Law continues to take shape as we welcome our first cross-appointed faculty members from the Ted Rogers School of Management (TRSM) and the Faculty of Arts. Though a law school may be new to Ryerson, there is a wealth of existing law research, expertise, innovation and partnerships at the university that has helped us design a Juris Doctor (JD) program that is built to expand the scope of legal education and prepare lawyers for the future.

From Law and Business to Human Resources and Organizational Behaviour at the Ted Rogers School of Management, and Criminology and Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts, the following six cross-appointed professors are all lawyers and respected academics who will help bring Ryerson’s Integrated Practice Curriculum to life:

  • Pnina Alon-Shenker, Department of Law & Business, TRSM
  • Timothy J. Bartkiw, Department of Human Resources and Organizational Behaviour, TRSM
  • Graham Hudson, Department of Criminology, Faculty of Arts
  • Gil Lan, Department of Law & Business, TRSM
  • Kernaghan Webb, Department of Law & Business, TRSM
  • Alex Wellington, Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts

I am also pleased to welcome the following three cross-appointees, who will join the Faculty of Law in the new year:

  • Asher Alkoby, professor, Department of Law & Business, TRSM (starts July 1, 2020)
  • Alexandra Orlova, professor, Department of Criminology, Faculty of Arts (starts September 1, 2020)
  • Idil Atak, Department of Criminology, Faculty of Arts (starts September 1, 2020)

These nine cross-appointees were selected for their diverse backgrounds, perspectives and expertise, but also their teaching capabilities, extensive research accomplishments and commitment to accessibility, diversity and inclusion. They have been involved in the planning and consultative stages of the school, and believe in and understand our overriding purpose of our program: to train practice-ready lawyers who are equipped with the entrepreneurial skills required to increase access to legal services for all Canadians.

As we continue to build Ryerson’s Faculty of Law, the university’s culture and DNA will become a critical link to our institution and will be a point of differentiation in the faculty that we hire, and the lawyers that we educate and train.

I look forward to sharing more updates on Ryerson’s law school in the months to come.
