Author Naomi Klein takes on capitalism in the climate change fight at Alumni Week

Keynote address covers why we need to change capitalism for real climate action
September 14, 2021
Naomi Klein.

Naomi Klein will deliver a wake-up call on September 27: our economic system is broken and it’s destroying our planet. Will we take serious action to build something more sustainable?

In her most provocative talk yet, Naomi Klein is set to take on capitalism, the greatest threat to humanity and the biggest obstacle to real climate action, on September 27 during Alumni Week. Klein has long said that a capitalist world is inherently unsustainable, and the atomized solutions we’ve been sold to address climate change won’t work. With the UN’s latest report on climate (external link)  sounding major alarm bells, now is the time to transform our failed system and build something radically better.

We have been told the market will save us, when in fact the addiction to profit and growth is digging us in deeper every day, Klein says. We have been told it’s impossible to get off fossil fuels when in fact we know exactly how to do it—it just requires breaking every rule in the “free-market” playbook.

Climate change, Klein argues, is a civilizational wake-up call, a powerful message delivered in the language of fires, floods, storms, and droughts. Confronting it is no longer about atomized, individual solutions. It’s about changing the world—before the world changes so drastically that no one is safe.

The talk will be moderated by 2021 Ryerson Leadership Lab (external link)   fellow Puninda Thind. Thind has been committed to building a sustainable, prosperous, equitable future and helping people understand and respect the interconnectedness of our world. Thind has participated in the United Nations climate change conferences, advancing meaningful youth engagement in global climate policy processes. She has been recognized as one of Canada’s top 30 under 30 sustainability leaders and one of Canada’s top 25 under 25 environmentalists.

Don’t miss this critical discussion. This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate, one of many thought-provoking events at the all-virtual Alumni Week, will take place on Monday, September 27 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. ET online via Youtube. Register for free on Eventbrite now (external link) .
