Elaine Santa Mina’s clinical area of expertise is in mental health nursing and leadership. Her research interests have two foci, both of which involve quantitative measurement. Her clinical research is on childhood trauma and adult self-harm and suicide, with a specific focus on measurement development and testing to assess self-harm intentions.  Santa Mina is developing a program of research in mental health and patient safety, inclusive of suicide risk reduction.  Her second area of research is in the development and psychometric testing of a web-based tool to assess prior learning with Internationally Educated Nurses.

Her teaching interests are research and statistics. She serves on the Board of Directors for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Lambda-Pi-at Large Chapter.
