Awards and scholarships  

Ryerson offers many different awards and scholarships to acknowledge students’ achievements, facilitate their education and promote their success.

As a student in the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing, you may qualify for some of these awards. Below are some examples of awards for which you may be eligible.

Application guidelines

How to apply:

  • You can apply for a maximum of three awards.
  • Review the criteria and required forms for each award.
  • Submit an application form with all applications, and include your signature where required. We do not accept digital signatures.
  • Only submit required documents. If your application requires a budget form, no supplemental documentation is required for proof of expenditures.
  • Scan your completed application and submit it electronically by email to Stephanie Assenza, Student Affairs Coordinator, at stephanie.assenza@ryerson.ca. We do not accept paper-based submissions.
  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • If you receive an award, you must attend the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing Student Recognition Ceremony in the fall. We reserve the right to rescind your award if you do not attend.

When to apply:

  • Applications for 2017 awards open on February 1, 2017.

Restrictions:

  • Collaborative Nursing Degree Program students who did not attend the Ryerson site during the Fall 2016 and Winter 2017 academic year cannot apply.

Aaron Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes a student who demonstrates enthusiasm and interest in the care of the diabetic.

Required documents:

  • One-page cover letter describing why your are an ideal candidate for this award
Adele Turcotte Award in the School of Nursing

Award criteria:

Recognizes the academic achievement of a Registered Nurse enrolled in the Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program or Master of Nursing program.

Preference is given to applicants who demonstrate an interest in diabetes research, education and care, as well as applicants who are practicing or intend to practice in the field.  

Applicants must:

  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons
  • Be Ontario residents
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher

Nomination information:

  • Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated by faculty or a member or the community.

  • Cover letter demonstrating your interest in diabetes research, education and care, as well as your experience and/or intention to work in the field
  • Two letters of support (from a faculty member, clinical advisor and/or employer)
Aden Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes a student who demonstrates a dedication to their studies and enthusiasm for the nursing profession.

Required documents:

  • One-page cover letter describing why you are an ideal candidate
Anne Whitaker Memorial Scholarship

Award criteria:

Recognizes the academic achievement of a full- or part-time student enrolled in the Post Diploma Degree Program, the Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (PHCNP) Certificate, the Master of Nursing or the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program who plan to provide professional care to the native community.

Applicants must:

  • Be of Aboriginal descent and/or demonstrate interest in working with an Aboriginal client population
  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons
  • Be Ontario residents
  • Have clear academic standing with no disciplinary notices on file
  • Demonstrate financial need

Required documents:

  • Cover letter outlining your current program of study, information about your Aboriginal heritage (if applicable) and the type of professional care you propose to offer to Aboriginal people within a community

  • Letter of support (from an employer or director of volunteer activities)
Caregiver Recognition Award in Honour of Sally and James Finney

Award criteria:

Recognizes a Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program student who has demonstrated a commitment to caregiving in the healthcare field. Preference will be given to those with a focus on dementia and/or the elderly.

Applicants must:

  • Be full-time or part-time students in the Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program or Collaborative Nursing Degree Program
  • Excel in a long-term care clinical experience
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher

Nomination information:

  • Faculty may nominate students by submitting a nomination letter

Required documents:

  • ­One-page cover letter that demonstrates your contributions and commitment to caregiving in the healthcare field
  • One letter of support from a faculty member or clinical placement advisor

Catherine Stanford Carter Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes a Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program student who demonstrates:

  • Clinical excellence and  commitment in the focus areas of palliative care, community health or gerontology
  • A commitment/intent to continue in the designated area of interest beyond graduation
  • Exceptional communication skills and commitment to the development of the profession

Applicants must:

  • Be Ontario residents
  • Have clear academic standing
  • Be in their third or fourth year of the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or have completed a minimum of 50% of the Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program

DIVE into Nursing Leadership Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes a Post-Diploma Degree Completion or Collaborative Nursing Degree Program student who has demonstrated leadership in social advocacy for vulnerable populations in their community. 

Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in either their third or fourth year of the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or in their first or second year of the Post-Diploma Degree Completion program
  • Be in clear academic standing
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher

Required documents:

  • One-page essay describing why you are an ideal candidate

Dorothy Wylie Scholarship

Award criteria:

Recognizes a top student from the Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program who is graduating in June or October, is planning on returning to hospital nursing and demonstrates leadership potential.

Nomination information:

  • Applicants must be nominated by faculty
Gail Donner Award

Award criteria:

Student who demonstrates good academic standing, a strong commitment to the nursing profession and leadership skills.

Required document:

  • One-page cover letter describing why you are an ideal candidate
Integracare Community Health Award (Sponsored by Integracare Incorporated)

Award criteria:

Recognizes a mature student in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program who demonstrates a positive attitude, contributions to the program, and a career interest in geriatric or community health.

Applicants must:

  • Be mature students in the full-time or part-time Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher

Kensington Foundation Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes two graduating students in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program and two graduating students in the Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program who demonstrate:

  • Nursing practice reflective of strong analytical and creative abilities
  • A commitment to the practice of nursing in the community

Applicants must:

  • Be graduating students in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program and Post-Diploma Degree Completion
  • Have clear academic standing

Required documents:

  • One-page cover letter demonstrating that your nursing practice is reflective of your strong analytical and creative abilities and your commitment to the practice of nursing in the community
  • A letter of support from a clinical instructor
Martha J. McKeown Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes a Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program student who demonstrates academic excellence and commitment in areas such as humanism, social justice and feminism.

Applicants must:

  • Be Ontario residents
  • Demonstrate financial need

Post-Diploma students should have an elective in one of the following areas: homeless clinic, public health, maternal infant placement, etc.

Nomination information:

  • Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated by their peers or Nursing faculty and staff.

Required documents:

  • One-page cover letter describing why you are an ideal candidate
  • Resume
  • Budget Form
  • Two letters of support (one letter must be from a Ryerson Nursing faculty member)
  • One to three communication samples, such as (but not limited to): newsletter, position paper, essay, Powerpoint presentation
Nancy C. Sprott Nursing Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes a Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program student who demonstrates:

  • Leadership in areas that exemplify the mission and values of the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing
  • A commitment to the field of nursing through work experience and volunteer activities in the community or in the Ryerson community

Applicants must:

  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons
  • Be Ontario residents
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher

Nomination information:

  • Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated by their peers or nursing faculty and staff

Required documents:

  • One-page cover letter describing why you are an ideal candidate

  • A letter of support from a nursing faculty member or community leader

Rachael Catherine Dean Scholarship

Award criteria:

Recognizes a student who demonstrates a dedication to social advocacy and the qualities of integrity and courage.

Nomination information:

  • Applicants can nominate themselves or be nominated by their peers or nursing faculty  

Required documents:

  • One-page cover letter describing why you are an ideal candidate
Rodney Yip Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes the academic achievement of a student in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program

Applicants must:

  • Be either a third- or fourth-year full-time program student 
    OR part-time post-diploma degree student of the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing
  • Be in clear academic standing
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate financial need

Usha George Award in Nursing

Award criteria:

Supports a fourth-year nursing student who has demonstrated strong academic performance and shown excellence in their clinical placement.

Applicants must:

  • Be a fourth-year, full-time student in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program OR a full-time or part-time student in the Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program who has completed NCL 700 at Ryerson
  • Have clear academic standing
  • Have a minimum CGPA of 3.00

Required documents:

  • Letter of support from clinical placement preceptor
Walker Wood Foundation Nursing Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes the academic achievement of a student in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program who has encountered significant life challenges.

Applicants must:

  • Be Canadian citizens
  • Be enrolled in their first year of the four-year undergraduate degree program in the Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing
  • Have a minimum CGPA of 3.00
  • Demonstrate financial need

Required documents:

  • One page cover letter describing how you have encountered significant life challenge(s)

The Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association Award

Award criteria:

Recognizes the academic achievement of a second- and/or third-year student in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program or graduate degree program who has demonstrated excellence and commitment in direct patient care.

Applicants must:

  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons
  • Be Ontario residents
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Be in their second or third year of the Ryerson Nursing Program at the time of application
  • Demonstrate overall academic excellence with a CGPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrate excellence and commitment in direct patient care (as described in their cover letter)

Daphne Cockwell School of Nursing Faculty Bursary

Award criteria:

Available to students in the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program and Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program through the generosity of current and retired faculty, administrative staff, alumni and community members.

Applicants must:

  • Demonstrate financial need 
  • Have clear academic standing

Lisa Rae Bursary

Award criteria:

Available to students in the part-time Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program who demonstrate financial need. 

Applicants must:

  • Be registered as an undergraduate student in the part-time Post-Diploma Degree Completion Program in Nursing
  • Have clear academic standing 
  • Demonstrate financial need through the submission of a budget form

  • One written statement (approx. 250 words) stating why you are a good candidate for the award
