The traditional image of nurses working at the bedside in hospitals is only one of the many opportunities nurses can fulfill today in our health care system and beyond.

The scope of nursing practice also encompasses health promotion and the delivery of primary health care services to individuals, families and communities as well as other spheres of practice, such as government, health policy settings, and research.

The career choices open to Registered Nurses today are unlimited. As a graduate of the Collaborative Nursing Degree Program, you will find opportunities for a career:

  • In the community: in public health nursing, home care nursing, community health nursing and working in ambulatory clinics, health centres, primary health care facilities, street health organizations, occupational health settings, and long term care settings.
  • In acute care and hospital settings: providing care to patients with acute and chronic conditions across a variety of units as well as in areas like rehabilitation and outpatient care.
  • In research: working in areas of research and implementation, as members of interprofessional and nursing research teams.
  • In global health settings: in addition to opportunities across Ontario, graduates of the Post Diploma Degree program can find opportunities as part of emergency, relief and community-building teams across the globe.

After graduation, you may also decide to expand your career choices and advancement opportunities even further by pursuing graduate studies in nursing.

As a student our Collaborative Degree Nursing program, you will be a part of an exciting journey to become a knowledgeable and compassionate practitioner.

Through the four years in the program, you will gain a solid foundation in nursing theory and knowledge as well as engage in a variety of high-quality and diverse practice experiences.

You will develop the skills and knowledge needed to provide nursing care in today’s world and to build meaningful and therapeutic relationships with patients, families and communities in which you will work. These relationships and experiences will be informed by your interpersonal skills and your high-quality clinical competency.

Starting at each of our three program sites (Toronto Metropolitan University, George Brown College and Centennial College) you will be provided with opportunities to experience high-tech simulation, and take part in comprehensive clinical scenarios and situations within the safety of a supportive teaching and learning environment. These experiences in our labs will help you develop the competence and confidence to provide skilled and thoughtful care.

A significant part of your nursing education will involve working with patients and communities across a wide range of nursing practice placements, in a variety of settings. Your experiences in placements will allow you to develop and apply your evolving knowledge, step by step, in supervised practice settings.

Overall, you will have access to knowledgeable and committed faculty members and clinical instructors, skilled and responsive academic advisors, preceptors and clinical staff who will support you in placements and lab settings and access to a range of student support services and resources at all three of our sites. All of this is intended to set the conditions for the success of our students.

We look forward to welcoming you as a student in our Collaborative Nursing Degree Program!
