Professional Certification
The School of Occupational and Public Health prepares you to pursue professional certification after graduation.
By demonstrating that you meet rigorous educational, experience and examination requirements, professional certification can set you apart and have a valuable impact on your career.
The Occupational Health and Safety program provides appropriate preparation for certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (external link, opens in new window) .
This designation is the benchmark in the profession.
You’ll also graduate prepared to pursue the Registered Occupational Hygienist (external link, opens in new window) designation and American designations such as Certified Industrial Hygienist (external link, opens in new window) or Certified Safety Professional (external link, opens in new window) .
Certifying bodies:
The Public Health program meets the educational requirements for certification as a public health inspector in Canada (external link, opens in new window) . To achieve full certification, you must:
- Earn a bachelor of applied science in Occupational and Public Health (Public Health) or another degree approved by CIPHI (external link, opens in new window)
- Complete 12 weeks of authorized field training with a recognized public health agency
- Prepare two reports on field investigations
- Take an oral exam
Certification is not a requirement for graduation.
For graduates planning careers in the private sector, professional certification by the CIPHI is not required, but does open doors to Canada-wide employment opportunities.
