Semi-precious: semaphore is an iteration of a long term work in progress entitled Semi-precious. The project considers the possibilities of the multiple, and the potential to build upon collective aspirations through reiterated actions. This iteration has been developed in collaboration with the 4th year students in Ryerson University's dance program. The project considers wider questions of how we can develop frameworks, or inhabit already existing structures and systems that allow for our collective desires to unfold.

The Dancers have worked with Justine over the fall and winter terms, working collaboratively to create 27 individual solos that are based on the same score. Each solo holds the same choreographic directives, and very individuated movements. In this way, everyone is working on the same thing, yet it manifests completely differently in each dancer.

On Friday, February 26, 2021 at 8:30 pm EST, the Dancers will perform the score in a window in their home that faces the outside world. For some, the solo will be visible by neighbours and passersbys, and for others the solo will be danced for the trees and surrounding landscape. With the priority being on the work of the dancer and their connection through space and time to their cohort, the project simultaneously prioritizes what is felt through time and space and what is seen in the immediate moment.

Justine A. Chambers is a dance artist living and working on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Her movement based practice considers how choreography can be an empathic practice rooted in collaborative creation, close observation, and the body as a site of a cumulative embodied archive. Privileging what is felt over what is seen, she works with dances that are already there – the social choreographies present in the everyday. Her recent projects have been hosted by Sophiensaele (Berlin), Contemporary Art Gallery (Vancouver), Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery (Vancouver), Agora de la Danse (Montreal), Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery (Pennsylvania), Canada Dance Festival (Ottawa), Nanaimo Art Gallery (Nanaimo), Artspeak (Vancouver), Mile Zero Dance Society (Edmonton), Burrard Arts Foundation (Vancouver), Dance in Vancouver, Festival of New Dance (St. John's) and Art Museum at University of Toronto. Chambers is the recipient of the Lola Dance Prize (2018), was selected for the Visiting Dance Artist Program at the National Arts Centre (2018-2019), and is currently Artist in Residence to SFU's Community Engaged Research Initiative. She is Max Tyler-Hite’s mother.
