Summer Programs

Ages 4-6

Become a Playful Player, and discover the amazing world of musical theatre. In our three week musical program our Playful Players will sing and dance their way to the big stage! They will learn songs and choreography, take on characters, wear costumes, and perform of 3-4 musical numbers with the Musical Theatre students at the Ryerson Theatre. Students will make new friends, discover how much fun performing can be, and have a lot of fun along the way. Working with our talented staff, our Playful Players have a wonderful time developing performance skills and exploring the wonderful world of musical theatre.

In this week long program, Playful Players will learn all the skills it takes to be a triple threat: singing, acting, and dancing! Students will work with our talented staff to develop their skills in the performing arts through theatre games and fun rehearsals. Using their new skills and imaginations, students will take on characters to work on a variety of songs from Broadway - from old classics to new smash hits, which they will put together to create a performance to be proud of. Friends and families will be able to enjoy this performance on the last day of the program.

In this two week program, students have the exciting opportunity of working together to create their very own play. Our talented staff will help students bring to life characters from their imaginations to create a story that is all their own. Playful players will play lots of games and make their own costume and set pieces as they work on their common goal together.  Students will work on speaking in front of others, both on their own and in a group, along with singing, dancing, and create their own dramatic worlds. A presentation on the last day will show you how much they’ve grown, and the world they have created!

Ages 7-12

In this one week musical theatre intensive, students discover the joy and power of musical theatre. Students audition on day one and receive their parts on day two. By Friday, they perform the musical in the Ryerson Studio theatre, complete with costumes, sets, and full technical elements. Throughout the process, students gain confidence, make friends, and develop social skills - all while singing and having a great time.

This 3-Week Camp allows students to share and grow their love of music, singing, dancing, acting and performing with others who share their passion. The young performers will work both in small class sizes, and with their large Broadway-style cast. They will develop creative thinking and planning skills while learning about musical theatre, rehearsing, playing games, having tons of fun! Our production has many roles and opportunities for all performers. This camp culminates in a Saturday performance for family and friends in the illustrious Ryerson Theatre.

Spend a week delving into the world of song and dance! Learn classics from the great musicals and some cutting-edge songs from the latest smash hits. Learn dance techniques that will make your performance pop and refine choreography to present on the final day. Students will work with instructors who have mastered their particular focus.

This 2-week long camp gives students an opportunity to learn about acting, theatre and performance. Students will work together to bring their imaginations to life as they develop characters, plot lines, and scripts as they create their own plays. Through games and activities, including a show on the last day, students will work on public speaking, self-confidence, and social skills while learning about creating characters, play development,  improvisation, physical theatre, and much, much more!

Spend a week bringing a play to life. Students will work with a director to dive into the material and bring a script from page to stage culminating in a final performance. In this fun acting focused performance program, students will learn about everything it takes to put on a play including blocking, character development, acting exercises and games, incorporating technical elements, and finally performing. Students will be able to showcase their work at their final performance on the last day of the program which family and friends will be able to attend and enjoy. Join us in bringing a story to life!

Ages 13-18

Take your passion for Musical Theatre to the next level and experience the incredibly rewarding experience of being a Leader. The Musical Theatre Leaders in Training Program accepts 16 dedicated students. The program has 3 main areas of focus:

1. Musical Theatre Master Classes

Learn from our professional music director and choreographer. Work in a small group developing rehearsal and performance techniques. Practice solo and ensemble singing and dancing. The master classes will culminating in the presentation of The Music Man Jr. on July 20th, and July 27th, 2019. In additon to the LIT-only number in the Musical, for the first time ever, the LITs will activly participate in many musical numbers of the Musical with all of the Musical Theatre students. 

2. Leadership Training

Mentor our younger students as they participate in exciting rehearsals towards the music Man Jr. Develop key leadership skills including communication, teamwork, trust, risk taking, time management, and planning. Leadership activities and games will call upon participants’ unique leadership styles and challenge them to grow their abilities. 

3. Behind the Scenes

Learn the inner workings of what it takes to bring a musical from page to stage. Specialty workshops from our in-house director, stage manager, designers, wardrobe team, and theatre technicians. Try your hand at theatre production and experience for yourself the excitement of “tech week”. This section will culminate in working as “running crew” for our Musicals on July 20th and 27th.

Musical: Leaders in Training is an Application+ Program, meaning it requires successful submission of additional materials to gain admittance.

The 2-week Teen Acting Academy invites teens to join performance intensive acting classes and workshops to have some fun and hone their skills. The Academy includes courses in: Theatre Performance, Writing for Stage and Screen, Shakespeare, Audition Technique, Movement, Voice and Speech, Improvisation and more!  The session will conclude with a final performance.

 

The Ryerson School of Performance Teen Acting Academy teaches young artists how to work in and audition for film, television, commercials, theatre and training programs. You'll gain practical, studio experience to craft your acting technique, on stage and on set, as we teach you to dissect and work with scripts. You will be immersed in intensive workshops in order to deliver your best work when faced with industry directors and producers. In order to cope with the intimidation of 'the business' of acting, our teaching artists will work with you to learn about industry elements, such as agents and casting directors. This is just the beginning!  We help you develop the tools to enjoy your work and have the potential to thrive in the performing arts.

Through the powerful, challenging music of Into The Woods Jr. students will explore what it truly takes to be a triple threat. In this two week intensive, work with industry professionals to bring your performance skills to the next level.  Students will audition, receive roles, rehearse scenes, songs, and choreography, and then bring it all together for a powerful culminating performance for family and friends on the last day of the program.

Teens will rehearse a published play and have a performance-ready piece in only two weeks! They will work with our talented staff compoased of professional actors, and current students from Ryerson School of Performance and other leading conservatory actor training programs. Our cast of teenagers will learn about and experience everything it takes for an actor to bring a play off the page and onto the stage. They will participate in dramatic readings, auditions, text analysis, table work, blocking, following impulses, making proposals, working with a director, taking notes, warming up, rehearsals, run throughs, incorporating technical elements, and at last performing. All in only 2 weeks! Family and friends will be able to enjoy a final performance at the brand new Ryerson Performance Studio Theatre on the last day.

Performance is just as much about what goes on behind the scenes as the action on stage. This workshop-style course will let you dip your toe into costuming, design, set and props, lighting, sound, and stage management as you work with the Center Stage: Teen program, to bring the performance to life. Combine artistic skill with your love of the stage. Open your eyes to a world full of opportunity to create, conceive, and collaborate. This program is perfect for those interested in the fine arts and crafts (including drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.), and will also benefit aspiring actors, giving them a more complete understanding of all the roles within the theatre.

Ages 15-19

Take your dance technique and performance to the next level in the heart of downtown Toronto at the Ryerson School of Performance Dance Intensive: Conservatory Prep. This 2 week full-time program is intended for dancers who already have many years of dance training and experience and are looking to pursue dance at a post secondary or professional level.Take 2 classes each morning in ballet, modern, contemporary, and jazz, and repertoire work in the afternoons. Meet like-minded aspiring artists with a passion for dance, and immerse yourself in pre-professional practical study.

Dance Intensive Conservatory Prep is an Application+ Program, meaning it requires successful submission of additional materials to gain admittance.
