Dr. Tiessen is an Associate Professor in the School of Professional Communication in the Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) at Ryerson University, a Research Associate at the Infoscape Research Lab, and a Faculty Associate with the Graduate Program in Communication and Culture (York U. and Ryerson U.). Dr. Tiessen is also the current Graduate Program Director for the School of Professional Communication's Masters (MPC) program.

In 2017 Dr. Tiessen was awarded a SSHRC Insight Grant in the area of “Digital Economy” to support research on the social implications of algorithmically-driven digital technologies and currently receives research support from the FCAD/Ryerson Creative Innovation Fund. Dr. Tiessen previously held a SSHRC Insight Development Grant, a SSHRC Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, and a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship in support of his research on digital media, creative economies, and contemporary theory.

Dr. Tiessen’s research has been presented internationally and has been published in leading scholarly journals and books including: Theory, Culture & Society; Cultural Studies; Cultural Studies<=>Critical Methodologies; European Journal of Cultural Studies; Topia; Volume; CTheory; MediaTropes; Rhizomes; Surveillance & Society; Space and Culture; Pli: The Warwick Journal of Philosophy; and Revisiting Normativity with Deleuze (2012, Bloomsbury).
