Performance: Production (BFA)
Is It for You?
Pursue a career in live entertainment by bringing artistic performances to life. This unique program offers hands-on training in production management, creative technologies and design applications for live performance and entertainment. You’ll gain leadership skills to develop, produce and manage theatre, dance, music and a wide range of live productions and get training in all aspects of a live show, including props and costumes, lighting and sound, technical production, stage management and publicity and marketing. You’ll learn from and work with visiting directors, choreographers and other artists, complete an independent project and access Toronto’s live performance industry. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to work in design and production of large corporate events, live concert events and innumerable theatrical and dance settings.

*Actual minimum grade ranges required for fall 2021 admission/wait list consideration will be determined based on grades and qualifications presented by the applicant pool as they become available. Required grade ranges may fluctuate from year to year (up or down) as a result of competition. Applicants not educated in Ontario may present the equivalent of the Ontario requirements. Ryerson reserves the right to determine equivalency at its sole discretion.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent with a minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses including the following program specific requirements.
Typically, a minimum overall average of 70% establishes eligibility for admission consideration; subject to competition individual programs may require higher prerequisite grades and/or higher overall averages:
- English/anglais (ENG 4U/EAE 4U preferred).
- The minimum grade required in the subject prerequisite (normally in the 65-70% range) will be determined subject to competition.

In addition to meeting competitive academic requirements, you are required to submit the following non-academic requirements. Your ability to follow and adhere to the requirements is part of the assessment of your application.
Your non-academic requirements are due by February 1, 2021 or 10 business days from your application submission date, whichever comes later.
Submit a 400 word statement (typed, double-spaced) explaining why you wish to be considered for the Performance Production program. You may wish to highlight your areas of interest, how you discovered the program and your personal artistic goals.
Save your statement as a .pdf file and upload it per the submission instructions below.
Submit a portfolio of any material that demonstrates your theatrical and/or creative skills (e.g. sketches, drawings, models, samples, production documentation, writing, etc.).
Use Google Drive (preferred) or another content provider to show us your work.
Please provide a link to your work in a .pdf file and upload this file (see instructions below). Ensure that the share settings are set so that anyone with the link can view it.
Reference Forms are a requirement for admission consideration. Two forms must be completed and submitted:
- One must be from a current or past academic/personal reference (e.g. guidance counsellor, teacher, professor). This form is titled “Academic Reference 1” in the Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal
- One reference should be work-related. This form is titled “Reference 2” in the Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal

Candidates will be informed about the online interview process after receipt of their application. Instructions will be outlined in an email.
The non-academic requirements assessment fee is $50 CDN and must be paid in order for your submission to be reviewed.
Pay using a Canadian bank account - by internet or telephone banking:
- Sign up with your bank for online or telephone banking
- Add Ryerson as a payee - Ryerson University - Tuition & Res Fees
- Your nine-digit Ryerson Student Number is your account number
- Follow the prompts to ‘pay bills’ and choose ‘Ryerson University - Tuition & Res Fees’ as the Payee
Pay using Western Union Business Solutions:
International students who do not have a Canadian bank account can pay through Western Union Business Solutions GlobalPay for Students, external link. This option allows you to pay the Canadian dollar student fees in the currency of your choice. Visit the International Payments section on our Fees Payment web page for instructions.
Applicants are required to submit all components of their non-academic requirements via the Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal. Due to the volume of applications received and our system performance, we strongly encourage you to submit your documents well in advance of the noted deadlines.
Admission decisions are provided via the Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal. The selection committee’s decision on admission is final. Unfortunately re-evaluation/reassessment of the non-academic requirements or individual feedback will not be available.
Here’s how to access your Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal account:
- Get your Ryerson Student Number in the email acknowledgement of your application
- Activate your Ryerson Online Identity. Fill in the Activation Form at www.ryerson.ca/accounts/. When asked for your Student/Applicant ID, enter your nine-digit Ryerson Student Number. Keep a record of your user name and password
- 24 hours after activating your Ryerson Online Identity, visit the Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal

Complete the following steps to submit your Reference Forms:
- Input your references’ contact information via the Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal. Please ensure that all reference information is inputted accurately. If you wish to amend your reference information (e.g. change reference, change email address) please complete and submit the google formUpload Help Form, external link, opens in new window
- Have your references complete the Reference Form. Your references will receive an email giving access to the Reference Form and instructions. If a reference has not received the email, please ask your reference to review their “trash” or “junk mail.” To request that the email be sent again, please complete and submit the google formUpload Help Form, external link, opens in new window
- Confirm that your references have completed the Reference Form. A Reference Form is complete once its status on the Choose>Ryerson Applicant Portal indicates “Received.” It is your responsibility to ensure each reference completes their Reference Form by the noted deadline
If you are applying for readmission or reinstatement, you may not be required to submit non-academic requirements.
You must inform Undergraduate Admissions of your intentions. Contact ServiceHub at 416-979-5036 and ask to speak with the admissions officer by February 1, 2021, or 10 business days from your application submission date (whichever comes later).
