As a proud part of Ryerson's International Women's Day programming, Athletics & Recreation invites the Ryerson community to come together over Zoom to share in a lunch-hour listen to 'Burn It All Down: The Feminist Sports Podcast You Need (external link) '.

Our staff-hosts will tour you through segments of the podcast's best episodes with facilitated discussion to follow. 5 days, 5 different episodes: March 8-12 @ 12:10-1:00pm.

About Burn It All Down

Burn It All Down (external link)  is a weekly podcast bringing an intersectional feminist view to the biggest stories in sports. The show's hosts (external link)  feature leading academic, journalistic and activist voices, including Toronto's very own Shireen Ahmed (external link) .

Episode 193 - Being A Woman In A Man's World (external link) 

This episode is dedicated to Shanda Renee Johnson. Recent publication of the sexual harassment of female journalists in baseball prompted Lindsay, Amira and Brenda to discuss their experiences working in male-dominated fields, the challenges of which are compounded by race. They talk about the historical leadership of Black women speaking out, like that of Civil Rights Activist and current Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, the importance of self-made communities for survival and the need for consistent accountability for perpetrators of sexual assault, harassment and racism to create change. Then they burn more news from sports that needs to be burned, celebrate those bringing light, including Torchbearer of the Week Toni Breidinger and share what's good and what they're watching: The Australian Open!!

Episode 2: Sexual abuse in gymnastics, support for women's sport, and diversity in sports media

In this week’s episode of Burn It All Down, Julie DiCaro, Jessica Luther, Brenda Elsey, Shireen Ahmed, Lindsay Gibbs, and Stacey May Fowles discuss the Larry Nassar hearing, the state of women’s professional sports, and the troubling silence of women in sports media. Plus, you’ll hear The Burn Pile and the Badass Women of the Week!

 

Episode 124: Body image issues, happy sports stories, interview w/ Iranian WNT coach Katayoun Khosrowyar (external link) 

In this episode, Lindsay, Shireen, and Amira talk about the FIBA World Cup (2:25); body image issues for women in sports (6:07); and sports stories that are making us happy, for a change (23:40).

Katie Wilson

Katie Wilson has been a Ryerson community member for 6 years, first as a student in Creative Industries, then as a student staff member working at RAC and now as Athletics & Recreation’s Instructional Program Coordinator. Katie identifies as a member of the Queer community and is an advocate for normalizing all bodies. Katie has a passion for community and inclusion and loves talking (for hours and hours) about social justice issues and the importance of moving your body. She spends her time hanging out with her two pet rats (Fran and Phoebe), playing minecraft and going on walks to the harbourfront.

Negin Khodayari

Negin Khodayari is a third-year journalism student at Ryerson and works as a social media and marketing student-leader with Athletics & Recreation. Though Negin is born and raised in the GTA, her Middle Eastern background allows her to see the world through two lenses. Despite her career aspirations changing almost every few months (there are so many possibilities!), Negin’s passion for equity and inclusivity always fuels her ambitions. These days her schedule consists of back-to-back Zoom sessions, romanticizing her pre-pandemic life, and journaling.
