Pamela Sugiman

Dr. Pamela Sugiman

Dean, Faculty of Arts, Toronto Metropolitan University

With over 20 years of experience in research and higher education, Dr. Pamela Sugiman’s personal history and long standing commitment to issues of social justice, equity and inclusion have profoundly shaped her scholarly pursuits. She is known as one of Canada’s leading oral historians.

Dr. Sugiman currently heads the Oral History Cluster of the Landscapes of Injustice project and is a member of the board of directors of The Atkinson Foundation and Pathways to Education Canada. She has served as president of the Canadian Sociological Association and director of the national executive board of the National Association of Japanese Canadians. Her current research explores the memories of eyewitnesses and bystanders to acts of racial injustice. She is also the co-author of Witness to Loss: Race, Culpability, and Memory in the Dispossession of Japanese Canadians (2017).

Dr. Sugiman has been awarded an Outstanding Contribution Award from the Canadian Sociological Association (2014) and a Marion Dewar Prize in Canadian Women’s History from the National Capital Committee on the Scholarship, Preservation and Dissemination of Women’s History (2007).
