A Career in Retail

The world of retail offers a wide array of career opportunities for new grads and students seeking summer work experience.

Overall, retail is the top employment sector in the country with almost 2 million working Canadians, 600,000 of whom hold tactical or managerial positions.

Retail involves planning, evaluating and overseeing the operations of various elements of retail establishments and the companies that support them.  This may include expertise in buying & merchandising, store operations, design and layout, marketing, human resources development, supply chain management, site selection, digital technologies and more.

I have felt the support from the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management from day one - from my first day at orientation to helping prepare me for internship interviews. There are so many great services and student groups available to us at any time. I know that I will continue to receive the support I need at the Ted Rogers School of Management in order to be successful after graduation.

Co-op and Internships

Our internship and co-op opportunities provide integrated academic learning with workplace experience, allowing students to apply theory and develop skills toward their professional goals.

All students in the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management will complete at least one documented internship but may choose to apply for entry to the co-op program at the start of their 2nd year in the degree.

Co-op

Retail Management students are eligible to apply for co-op in their second year.   

The Co-op program will allow students to gain 4 terms of work experience and explore a number of different roles that will help them make informed decisions when determining their career. The integration of Co-op with the Bachelors of Commerce degree will lengthen the duration of the program from four to five years for participating students.

Internship

The summer Internship Program is designed to develop measurable, professional skills through approved experiential learning opportunities. 

Students will complete an internship preparation course (RMG799) in the winter leading up to their work placement.  Internship work terms are typically May-August (minimum 400 total hours), which is immediately followed by a fourth year course in the Fall to reflect on their experience, assess their personal development and continue to expand their leadership capabilities.
